Galaxy A51 vs Galaxy A52. More than just evolution

Hello people, 2022 has changed a lot in all areas of life, including in the mobile industry. A lot of people have started turning their attention to the mid-range market rather than flagships. This is not surprising; the middle class has grown very much in recent years and, in fact, is inferior to flagships only in some sense in functions that are unnecessary for daily experience.

In this segment, Galaxy A51 became the most successful Android smartphone of the year worldwide. Almost 2 million A51s were sold in Russia, which is simply colossal.

Thus, it seems Samsung has found the recipe for success and is now trying its best to replicate the success of the Galaxy A51 by releasing a direct sequel called the Galaxy A52. The new smartphone comes in 4G and 5G variants, but more importantly, it boasts some flagship-level specifications that might convince even Galaxy A51 owners to upgrade their smartphone.

The success of last year's Galaxy A51, as I noted in my review of this smartphone, can be attributed to the solid build quality and beautiful design, excellent AMOLED Infinity-O display, excellent One UI shell and decent cameras.

What did Samsung do this year? They improved the smartphone in all these areas, but they didn't stop and improved some more.

So, the design of the Galaxy A52 has been redesigned and now presents a simpler style, as the camera block is made in the color of the back. The block still protrudes slightly beyond the body, but visually, it looks much more organic.

The back of the smartphone is still made of polycarbonate, but now it has a matte finish. Therefore, fingerprints are practically invisible on it. All colors are light, in keeping with the new design language.

In my opinion, the A52 is undoubtedly superior to the A51 in design. There are no changes in build quality, everything is as good as it was. Buttons on the right. The slot location has moved to the top and the slot itself is now a combo slot. That is, you will not be able to insert two SIM cards and a micro SD into it, like in the A51. You will have to choose either two SIM cards, or one SIM card + microSD.

Let's move on to the next point. Galaxy A52 is equipped with the same 6.5-inch display, but with a higher refresh rate (90 Hz / 120 Hz for 4G / 5G respectively, in Russia only 4G). Brightness increased from 600 to 800 nits. On top is Gorilla Glass 5 protection. The A51 has 3rd generation protective glass.

In the case of cameras, you get the same package as last year. These are the main camera, super wide-angle, macro and depth sensor. However, the A52 has a better main sensor.

On the A51 it is 48 MP f/2.0, and on the A52 it is 64 MP, f/1.8. That is, the sensor resolution and aperture ratio have increased. This should give the new fighter an advantage in low light; the smartphone uses tetra-binning technology, resulting in brighter new photos.

However, based on the first photos from the A52, I would not say that there is any great progress in night photography. So don't count on a miracle.

But the A52 camera added optical image stabilization, and that’s more of a deal.

In general, the camera began to take more detailed and clear pictures, but otherwise the improvements were not radical.

The remaining sensors remained unchanged. As well as video shooting modes. Both smartphones are capable of FHD 60 fps, and 4K 30 fps. The A52 boasts a new camera mode called Fun with Snapchat filters and masks. Quite similar to AR sketches, but of course there are more different filters, and they will be constantly updated. I admit that later other smartphones will receive this mode. Although at the presentation they said that this is an exclusive mode for the A52 and A72.

In fact, on smartphones of this class, the only thing that matters is how the main camera shoots. Because with other sensors we usually get very mediocre results that we don’t even want to compare. Moreover, both macro and super-wide can be replaced by the main camera in 95% of cases.

Therefore, it is very good that Samsung has focused its efforts on the main lens. It's nice to see the addition of optical stabilization, increased aperture and higher resolution.

The selfie camera remains the same, it is 32 MP f/2.2.

Moving on to the software, One Ui 3.1 has become even more interesting. Although this is a conditional advantage, because the A51 will also receive this software version a little later.

But the A52 will receive major updates for 1 year longer, up to Android 14. While the last big update of the A51 will be version 13 of Android.

The battery capacity on the A52 has increased by 500 mAh, amounting to 4,500 mAh versus 4,000 mAh. Fast charging support has also become larger: 25 W versus 15 W, but both smartphones come with 15 W charging.

Speaking of the package, the A51 has the advantage of coming with good AKG headphones.

Still no wireless charging. This, of course, could be another killer feature of the A52, and we previously heard that Samsung was considering adding this feature to the mid-range segment, but that's not the case. The A52 and A72 did not receive wireless charging.

But they got stereo speakers. The sound on the A52 is 43% louder than the A51. But more importantly, the sound quality has improved. It now sounds much bigger and clearer. This is a big advantage of the A52.

Another advantage of the new product is the addition of protection against water and dust according to the IP67 standard. Now you don't have to worry about dropping your smartphone in the toilet. No, it's still scary. But at least the phone will survive when immersed in water up to a meter for 30 minutes. I tested my A52 and it really is not afraid of short-term immersion in water. Everything worked and still works.

And finally, the chip was also updated. Samsung decided to switch to Snapdragon this year, however, don't think that Exynos is losing ground. Most likely, it was more profitable to install the Snapdragon 720G in a smartphone than Exynos’ own solution. The A52 5G version comes with an even more powerful Snapdragon 750G chip.

Let me remind you that the A51 was released on Exynos 9611. There is actually no radical difference between this chip and the 720G. True, they have different technical processes, 8nm for the Snapdragon 720G versus 10nm for the Exynos 9611. This means that the chip from Qualcomm should be more energy efficient.

In practice, I didn't notice much of a difference in performance between the two smartphones. They both handle heavy games on medium graphics settings and they both fly through the interface and applications if they have enough RAM.

By the way, the RAM and storage memory options are similar, except that the starting version of the A52 now starts with 128 GB of permanent memory, versus 64 GB for the A51. There is an option for RAM, from 4 to 8 GB. And I recommend taking more RAM, since 4 GB is not enough for these smartphones. And to be honest, I don’t understand at all why the A52 even has this 4 GB option. Absolutely, it was necessary to install 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage in the basic configuration.

But we have what we have. It remains to talk about prices. And here there is a tricky moment. Because the starting global price of a smartphone has remained virtually unchanged, however, in our market it has increased by as much as 7,000 rubles.

Yes, the A52 in the 4+128 GB version costs 27,000 rubles. And of course it's a little expensive. This is clearly a price with a reserve, in order to later make various promotions and discounts. Although on the other hand, looking at all these characteristics and improvements, this is definitely an upper-mid-level smartphone, i.e. it seems to be of a higher class than the A51.

Therefore, by the way, it is quite difficult to say which of these smartphones is better. The A51 is still very competitive today. In terms of price-quality ratio, it still has no equal.

However, the A52 offers much more. But the price also turned out to be higher.

Accordingly, when choosing between these smartphones, I would proceed from your budget. They are both worth the money and the price difference is more than justified.

The Galaxy A51 has a screen limited to 60Hz, has an older, less powerful chip (though not by much), less memory as standard, slower (15W) charging, weaker Gorilla Glass, no OIS for the main camera, no rated IP67, there are no stereo speakers, and the A51 may already have a more dated design language.

The Galaxy A52 brings significant improvements in many key areas without making any sacrifices. Some of these updates are unexpected but more than welcome, and what it ultimately comes down to is that the Galaxy A52 is a worthy buy for both new customers and existing Galaxy A51 owners.

The Galaxy A52 isn't just an annual update with a few upgraded components, it's more of a next-generation mid-range device.

People, but write in the comments, will you buy the Galaxy A52? How do you feel about this price? Will you update from A51?
