Nokia 8
HDM Global, the company that owns the Nokia brand, presented a new flagship in London - Nokia 8. The appearance of the new product was not a surprise for two reasons: we have seen the gold version of the smartphone more than once in leaks, and the design itself is absolutely in the spirit of all new Nokias. The smartphone has a recognizable style that is somewhat reminiscent of previous Nokia smartphones on the back, but the front is very similar to other Chinese smartphones. The body is made of a single piece of aluminum, with plastic antenna inserts on the top and bottom ends. There is dust and moisture protection according to the IP54 standard. Nokia 8 has two types of color: matte and glossy. There are four colors in total: brushed steel, matte indigo, glossy indigo and glossy copper. The latter, by the way, will apparently be the most fashionable; the same color should appear in the new iPhone 8. Yes, Nokia 8 does not have a frameless display, but the appearance is pleasant, and the technical characteristics are sufficient to call this smartphone a flagship.
Hardware components of Nokia Lumia 800
To make the Lumia 800 one of the best, the smartphone was equipped not only with unique software, but also with powerful hardware. This is a 1.4 GHz second-generation Qualcomm MSM 8255 processor, an Adreno 205 video accelerator, 512 megabytes of RAM and 16 gigabytes of disk space. As you can see, the characteristics are almost completely identical to the flagship HTC Titan smartphone. The only difference is a slightly less powerful processor, 1.4 versus 1.5 gigahertz. But Nokia uses a display with a smaller diagonal by a whole inch. The display type is Super AMOLED. We have talked about this type of display more than once. Its disadvantages are a noticeable shift to a green tint when displaying white and a predominance of red when watching a video. For the rest, we can only rejoice. Excellent viewing angles, rich colors and reference blacks.
The performance of the Lumia 800 is at a high level, but rating this parameter is more of a fashion statement due to Android, and not a real necessity. After all, we have not yet encountered Windows Phone smartphones that would work with hitches.
Camera
The smartphone has an 8-megapixel camera with the ability to record HD video. Photo and video quality is average. It’s surprising, because the examples that we saw before spoke about something else, and either it all depends on the particular specimen taken, or the shooting conditions. One thing is absolutely clear: you can improve the final result by choosing the right white balance and exposure. In automatic mode the camera has problems with this.

Play video and music
With video and audio playback, the smartphone is as good as it can be for a Windows Phone, given the need to use the Zune to copy files to and from the phone. The user can forget about USB Mass Storage or watching unconverted video. But you can be sure that since the files were transferred to the phone, it will be able to play them.
Optics from Carl Zeiss
Nokia 8 was equipped with a 5.25-inch QHD display, a 3090 mAh battery, an under-screen fingerprint scanner, three microphones and USB-C. The new product will run on bare Android 7.1.1, which means the smartphone will receive any updates quickly. But the main thing is the dual main camera with optics from the legendary Carl Zeiss. The modules themselves are 13 megapixels each, the main one with optical stabilization and color images, the second module produces black and white images. Just like in Huawei smartphones, the Nokia 8 combines frames from both cameras into one and produces a photo with an extended dynamic range. In addition, using the second camera module, you can take portraits with bokeh effect and true black and white photos. The smartphone has a dual autofocus system: phase and laser, which should provide very fast focusing. The front camera is also 13 megapixels, with f/2.0 aperture and phase detection autofocus.
Nokia Lumia 800 interface
Like any other Windows Phone smartphone, the Lumia 800 uses the Zune app to download files. We have already discussed the limitations this application imposes on file transfer in our review of HTC Titan. But those who have encountered iTunes will find the program from Microsoft at least no more difficult.
The main trump cards of Windows Phone from Nokia are free maps, separately for car and pedestrian navigation. Their implementation is at a decent level, but the most important thing is that they are free and, for example, when going on a trip, you just need to download maps of the required area, and upon arrival, use only communication with GPS satellites, without an operator, and save on costs.
Other differences include a hub with recommended applications and a guide. It is these nuances that make the Lumia the most packaged Windows Phone smartphone.
In all other respects, this is a typical representative of devices running a mobile OS from Microsoft. The speed and operating time are an excellent example for Android, but reduced multitasking and the lack of Ukrainian localization spoil the overall impression of Windows Phone.
However, the fact that work on the first-born is in full swing is evidenced by the number of updates released during the time the smartphone was being tested. At the beginning of 2012, they promise the release of firmware that will improve sound quality, as well as a problem with rapid battery drain.
Results: Nokia Lumia 800
The smartphone is the definite flagship Windows Phone for Nokia, but if we consider all the devices running this operating system, the choice is not so obvious. Nokia has managed to achieve a good balance between appearance, technical characteristics and implementation of software gadgets, but using the Lumia 800 for several days, it becomes clear that some things need improvement. In general, given the cost of a smartphone at retail, even at the time of its release, this is one of the best offers among single-platform devices and those who value compactness in a device.

About Carl Zeiss
Zeiss AG is a German company that has become famous for producing excellent optics since 1846. Over its one and a half century history, it has given the world a large number of optical developments and revolutionized devices such as microscopes and optical sights. Now the main directions of the Zeiss company are the medical field, optical devices, consumer optics and semiconductors.
Consumer photography and camera-related technologies are just a small part of Zeiss' business. The main profit comes from medicine (microscopes, spectroscopes and image processing technologies).
Consumer goods include camera lenses, binoculars, and optics.
Previous OEM deals
The company is well known for its partnership with Sony. Nokia is far from the first, because the Germans have been working with Sony since 1995. By the way, this year Sony began its rapid growth in the consumer photography market.
The first camera, co-produced with Sony, was the Handycam CCD-TR555 in 1996. The follow-up was the launch of the DSC-F55K Cyber-Shot in 1999. And since 2006, Carl Zeiss has been producing all DSLR lenses for top-end Sony cameras.
Nokia N90 is the first smartphone that was a collaboration with Zeiss. The phone had a 2 megapixel camera. It was released in 2004.
With the start of introducing its products into smartphones, the company began close cooperation with Nokia.
The latest Nokia-Zeiss gadgets were the 808 PureView and the Lumia 1020, which had the best modules on the market - the best solution for smartphones. It was a revolution in smartphone cameras.
It is also worth mentioning the iconic N95 model, which is considered the best on Symbian with a 5 MP camera installed. And the N93 became the best smartphone for video recording.
The future of Nokia-Zeiss
Since there has been no official announcement about what technologies Nokia-Zeiss will work on together, we can only guess.
Most likely this will be a restart of PureView. It is possible to release an updated 41 megapixel module for smartphones with improved characteristics.
Phones with two main cameras that can create a stereo effect, optical zoom, new image processing technologies... As an alternative, continued development of digital photo processing, improved digital zoom (something similar to what is used in the OnePlus 5 phone).
Xenon flash, image stabilization and post processing. By the way, top Nokia smartphones have always been famous for their good camera performance.
One thing is for sure - the joint product of two eminent companies will not leave consumers indifferent. If the new Nokia smartphones do not have the best characteristics on the market, their cameras will definitely be excellent.
Hello dear friends, today we will talk about the camera of the Nokia 808 PureView smartphone, which somewhat surprised me and shocked many. In Russia, the device began to be sold on June 15 (retail chains), and without hesitation, I decide to get to know it better. Having called the nearest adequate salon, which had the opportunity to bring it to me to order, I am patient, and the very next day, I am holding this clever handset in my hands.
And where would we be without it: Nokia 3310 (2000)
The best Nokia.
Perhaps not a single selection or collection of Nokia phones can do without this legend. How many jokes have already been made about its reliability and, moreover, for good reason. The phone actually has one of the most durable bodies of any phone and cheap parts if repairs are ever needed.
And this is yet another Nokia that has become a movie star. in The Matrix , but all the heroes of the film Hellraiser 8 carried this pipe during a party in an ominous house.
Some craftsmen even modified the hardware, installed flash memory in the phone and downloaded e-books into it. How, it is true, one can read from it is a mystery to me, but the point here is the possibility itself!
In case someone didn’t know and forgot, 3310 was produced in several colors: dark blue (it was the most common), light gray, blue, red and yellow. If you wish, you could buy a replacement cover or front part and change the appearance of your device.
Is it possible to buy
Ads for the sale of new Nokia 808 PureView still sometimes appear on Avito and eBay. Sellers refuse to check a smartphone for known defects before selling them, and there are quite a few of them. Some devices have very quiet speakers, some have very dim Always-On (this is generally strange), some were shipped with defective Hynix drives (they simply die after some time), plus the microUSB connector often quickly becomes loose. (In addition to this, by the way, there is a 3.5 mm minijack and even micro-HDMI.) What is most annoying is that there are also defective cameras that color the photo in a pink-green gradient. So, if you suddenly decide to buy yourself one 808, be prepared for all sorts of troubles.
conclusions
Even six and a half years later, the Nokia 808 PureView still has something to surprise you with. In many scenarios, its camera performs as well as modern flagships, offering natural color reproduction and the highest detail. It is hardly suitable for everything else - most Symbian services no longer work, and those that are still available can break at any moment. At the same time, one cannot fail to note the good built-in keyboard, excellent battery life and a very comfortable case with cool plastic. If your smartphone usage scenarios are feasible on the 808, you will certainly enjoy this device. A true legend.

Nokia 8110 (1996)
Nokia 8110 or popularly “banana” has become a real movie star, yes, yes. The device “lit up” in The Matrix , where the main characters used this phone to keep in touch in the virtual world.
Unlike the prop, Nokia 8110 had one drawback - the lid did not have a mechanism for quick opening. In the film it was added purely for effect. However, a little later Nokia released a modification with such a “feature”, but only in a limited edition. The batch quickly sold out.
The reissue 8110 is a good caller.
Speaking about the technical component, it should be noted that the Nokia 8110 was equipped with a single-band module operating in GSM 900 networks. It supported SMS and was equipped with a monochrome screen.
By the way, we have a review of the 2022 re-release of this phone.
Nokia 3250 (2005)
In the mid-2000s, this was the dream of all young people. A Symbian smartphone that offered an unusual form factor for a relatively low price—the keyboard unit could rotate 270 degrees.
On the reverse side there were music control keys, and a camera with a resolution of 2 MP was placed on one of the faces. The play button also acted as the shutter key while shooting.
I remember how I saw such a device from my friend in 2008 and was absolutely delighted. It seemed like it was some kind of smartphone of the future.
Design and screen
The first thing that strikes you about the Nokia 808 PureView now is that it is very small. We are already so accustomed to shovels of different sizes that a smartphone with a 4″ screen is surprising. It gives the long-forgotten feeling of a device that is really comfortable and not at all difficult to use with one hand. Despite its modest size, the 808 is anything but light, weighing 169g. In the hand, this heaviness feels pleasant; the mass is well distributed throughout the body. In general, holding the Nokia 808 PureView in your hands is a real pleasure.
Another thing that was perceived as completely normal six years ago, but looks unusual now, is the removable back cover. Collapsible designs of smartphones with removable batteries and SIM slots underneath are a thing of the past. It also uses a SIM tray of a very unusual design for these days. The first time I inserted a SIM card, I was dumb for several minutes, trying to remember how to use them.
The Nokia 808 also has an unusually large number of hardware keys. Volume rocker, two-stage camera button, reset and call buttons, central menu key. Instead of a traditional lock button, this model uses a lever. This virtually eliminates accidental clicks. Often such details turn out to be weak points in the design of a smartphone, but, according to reviews from 808 owners, the lever in this model is very reliable. The smartphone is turned on and off using the End button, just like in push-button phones. Another unusual moment!
I have already spoken about the very small screen (4″), but there are a few more points in it that I would like to draw attention to. Firstly, the display has a very low resolution, it is only 640x360 pixels (nHD, one-ninth Full HD, similar to qHD, a quarter Full HD). That's even smaller than WVGA! Such a screen could not stand up to criticism even then, seven years ago, let alone in modern times. But this is an AMOLED panel with ClearBlack technology, which guarantees the highest contrast and excellent behavior in direct sunlight. This is very important for a camera phone. There is no oleophobic coating, so the glass is extremely reluctant to wipe off. Even after all these years the screen is burnt out and afterimages are visible all over the screen.

At MWC 2012, the then completely Finnish Nokia made a breakthrough in mobile photography. The company presented the 808 PureView smartphone, which received a camera with a record resolution of 41 megapixels. It was possible to surpass this level only at the end of last year with 48-megapixel Quad Bayer cameras, but no one else has “full-fledged” 40+ megapixel cameras. Seven years later, we managed to get a fully working copy of the legendary smartphone (thanks, osenok!) to tell how the miracle from 2012 is perceived now and whether its camera is still the best.
