In almost all cases, the default font on your Android phone or tablet will suffice. The Roboto font is great. It looks nice and is generally adaptable in size for convenience. But, there will always be Android users who would prefer some other font; those who would like to stand out from the crowd. And there will always be a small crowd of people willing to tinker with their Android device's fonts just for the sheer pleasure of it.
If you belong to this group, then you are on the right page. The great thing is that Android is a super-customizable mobile operating system; it even allows you to change the fonts used in the user interface. The font changes, however, not necessarily easily. In many cases, replacing a font requires some technical knowledge.
This guide will teach you how to change fonts on Android. Two options: one using root rights, the other without. (For a visual and general idea, watch our video at the end of this post).
Why change the font on Android
Often, users are driven by the desire to give their mobile gadget an individual style, going as far as possible from the template design of Android or another shell. But sometimes the task of changing the font on Android becomes a necessity - for example, if the default letter size does not allow reading from the screen due to vision problems.
Typically, the system font can have 4 parameters changed:
- family - for example, the default device is Roboto, but you want Arial or Comic Sans;
- style - straight or oblique (italics);
- weight—regular, bold, or bold;
- size (letter size).
The family, style, weight and other properties of a particular font are recorded in its file. The size is changed using the operating system.
How to change italic color
Before you change the font color on Android, you need to open the “Settings” on the device. Then you must follow the following procedure:
- Find the "Font" .
- Click on the line “Display scale” . There are several options here that control the font, color, and size. You should select “Color” , then find the one you like or create a new one using the color ring.
- After all the steps, click “Done” .
If this option does not suit you for some reason, then you can root the device, and then modify anything in the interface.

Why are there few fonts in the settings?
Some smartphones have a flexible font replacement system, but there are not many such models on the market. The interface of the Android operating system belongs to Google, and all the fonts used inside also belong to this company, so using third-party options by default is unprofitable for a large IT giant, since you will have to pay for each smartphone and make deductions to the owners.
That is why it is also impossible to even change the style options in the system using standard methods, otherwise each user would change the visual design of the text, violating the rights of the owners. But don't worry! If you decide to change the font, you can do this in many ways, and there are still enough loopholes for both beginners and experienced users.

How can you quickly “transform” your smartphone without buying a new one? You can set a new wallpaper for your home screen or simply change the ringtone. But there is a third way - to replace the standard boring font in the mobile operating system.
In most cases, Android has the Roboto font installed by default. It was developed by Google and released to the general public in 2012.
Most often, everyone is happy with it; they love it for its neat, even lines and clarity. But there will always be those who want to stand out from the crowd.
If you consider yourself one of such people, this article is for you. A huge advantage of Android as an OS is its complete “customizability”. The system allows the user to change the built-in fonts. However, being able to replace fonts is not always an easy task. This often requires additional knowledge. In this article you will learn about two ways to install fonts on Android: with and without root access.
Stock Android, unfortunately, does not have a built-in function for replacing fonts. However, many smartphone manufacturers are making improvements to the firmware and allowing users to change fonts. These include Samsung, LG and HTC. As a rule, the default settings for changing fonts are located in the “Display” section.
For example, Samsung preinstalls several fonts to choose from. If they are not enough, additional ones can be downloaded via Google Play. But most often it is paid.
To change the default font, you need to go to “Settings - Display - Font - Font Style”.
Just click on the font you like in the list and then confirm your choice. The font change will happen instantly. You don't even need to restart your phone. The new font will be displayed everywhere: in system menus, in SMS and even in the status bar.
Go Launcher
The first way to replace fonts without obtaining root rights is to install a third-party launcher. The most popular shell for Android, Go Launcher, is perfect for this. She has the broadest capabilities. Among other things, there is a function for changing fonts.
To replace fonts in Go Launcher, copy the fonts that we need to any folder on your phone. Then launch Go Launcher.
Go to Settings (specifically the shell itself, not the phone). Then select the “Label and Font” section. We select the font that we need, or use “Search” to install third-party fonts.
The changes will take effect immediately. This is how you can quickly and efficiently change the style of Go Launcher.
iFont
The next way to replace fonts without root access is the iFont application. It is available on Google Play and more than 10,000,000 users have chosen it. “Enjoy life, enjoy the font” - this is the unusual motto of this application.
iFont can replace fonts on certain models of Samsung, Meizu, Xiaomi, Huawei phones. You can easily update fonts on Samsung Galaxy S3, S4, Note, Note II without root rights. On other models - depending on your luck. It is possible to replace fonts with HTC, Sony, Motorola - but with root access. The following pattern is interesting: the older the Android firmware on your smartphone, the greater the likelihood of replacing fonts without obtaining root access. For example, on Galaxy S6, S7, S8 smartphones with Android 6.0.1, the installation of third-party fonts is blocked by Samsung.
Before using the app, be sure to allow installation of apps from unknown sources in the Security section of your smartphone.
After launching the application, you need to select the font language. Select “RU (Russian)”. Then click on the style you like and click “Download”. As a rule, fonts weigh about 150 KB. Then click “Install”. We go to the phone settings and see the new font. Choose it and enjoy.
FontFix
FontFix is an application similar to iFont, but with more intrusive advertising. It has many fonts to choose from and also has several ways to change them.
More than 4,000 fonts are available for installation here. Some of them are paid. As always, not all smartphones are supported, only Samsung. But, with root rights you can install them on almost all devices!
Root access
Root access on a phone is administrator rights that allow you to edit even system files and files hidden from the average user.
Typically, these rights are obtained by flashing the smartphone. This is not a secure process, but if you have root access, then most likely you are an advanced Android user. And the instructions below are just for you. Remember that you do everything at your own peril and risk!
The easiest access is to launch the Total Commander file manager and manually copy and then replace the desired fonts. You need to go to the /system/fonts folder and replace Roboto-Regular.ttf. This is the most common font in Android. Just take your Arial.ttf and copy it to the /fonts folder with the name Roboto-Regular.ttf. Don't forget to backup all fonts in this folder. Then restart your smartphone and enjoy the new font.
There is a simpler option - you just need to select the font installation mode in iFont or FontFix - root. The applications will copy and install everything themselves.
PS Where to get fonts you ask? We recommend several places for you:
Here you have access to a large library of free fonts from Google. There are more than 800 of them.
To download the font you like, select it and click on +. Then click on the dark bar at the bottom of the screen, then click on the “Download” icon. As in the screenshot below.
Summarizing
Some time ago, you could find another program on Google Play that was used to install new fonts. It was called Font Installer and was distinguished by the fact that it supported not only the options it contained. You could install absolutely any font by copying it from your computer to a memory card. But this application is not currently available on Google Play, so we will not consider it. Let us only note that its use also requires superuser rights, even on Samsung smartphones.
You can play around with a variety of fonts, but you should keep in mind that not all of them are suitable for comfortable reading large amounts of information from a smartphone screen. A standard font is best suited for this task, which is another reason why Google is in no hurry to build in additional text styles.
The SamsungSans font is also good for reading - it was developed by South Koreans over several years. Over this period of time, numerous tests have confirmed that text written in this font is perceived by the mind faster, just as the eyes get tired from reading such text quite slowly.
Thus, you can make a beautiful font on your phone using different methods. Choose the appropriate option for yourself and carefully follow the instructions in the instructions.
