System requirements for installing Troika on your phone

In order for the user to be able to install and use the application, the following requirements must be met:

  • The mobile device must be equipped with NFC technology. For Android OS users, its version must be 4.0 or higher.
  • Availability of continuous access to the Internet.
  • Support for Mifare Classic technology, which makes it possible not only to top up the card balance, but also to record subscriptions. This technology is not supported by all smartphones with NFC, so it’s best to check with the manufacturer or in the phone’s instructions.

  5. To be tested.
  6. Click on “Next”.

Keep in mind! Payment will only be possible through the Safari browser.

How to check your account balance

Several effective methods have been specially developed to check the Troika card. Since the card uses the principle of an electronic wallet, there are methods that allow you to check your balance without actually using it. Let's take a closer look at all the check options:

  1. Yellow terminal.

Almost all Moscow metro stations have special yellow terminals, which are attached closer to the ticket offices. The plastic media is simply applied to the terminal scanner and after a certain time detailed information from the card is displayed on the screen.

  2. Official applications from the developers: “Troika Balance Check”, “Moscow Transport Cards”, “My Travel Card”.

All owners of Android and iOS mobile gadgets with a built-in NFC function will be able to quickly check their balance through the installed application. To do this, you need to touch the card to the back panel of the smartphone, after which all the necessary information from the card is displayed on the phone screen.

  3. Option "Mobile ticket".

Many modern gadgets support the universal “Mobile ticket” function, which can be easily connected in any official operator’s communication store. The balance is checked through the main menu, in the “Balance” section.

  4. SMS message. Mobile operators MTS, Beeline and Megafon have introduced a special short number for their subscribers to check the balance and the remaining number of trips on a valid subscription. An SMS with the word “balance” is sent to number 3210, after which the subscriber receives the information of interest in a reply SMS message.

Unfortunately, the Troika card does not yet have a personal user account, but the official representative promises clients to develop one by 2022. Progress does not stand still; in the near future, using Troika will be even easier and more comfortable.

Why can’t you just put the Troika card under the case?

The Troika card has an NFS chip, and some people want to trick others by inserting a means of payment under the cover, but the result is not satisfactory. Why? There are several factors that prove the low efficiency of the card in this case. This:

  1. Signal transmission for Troika cards is insignificant. They work at very close range. For the transaction to take place, you will have to place the card close to the turnstile. The covers do not allow this to be done. Hence the problems with reading data. Before the payment goes through, the person will attract everyone's attention, as a special signal will be heard and heard by others.
  2. Impressive card size. Not every case will fit the Troika, since its size is the same as a credit card. Often the edges of the card remain outside and the case cannot be attached to the gadget as needed. Some people manage to reduce the means of payment, but after such fraud it no longer works fully. Almost the entire card has “tracks” of the NFS chip, and if you touch one of them you risk ruining the card.
  3. Blocking contactless services. If you use Apple/Android/Samsung Pay, then installing “Troika” on the back of the smartphone will cause constant failures both when paying for travel and purchases.

How to set up Apple Pay and install on iPhone

Also, placing the card under the case can lead to incorrect operation of the phone itself. Often various windows pop up on the screen, it becomes impossible to lock the screen, errors in the operation of applications, etc. Nobody likes this and only says that you need to immediately remove the Troika away from the phone.

All of the above points convince users not to insert the card under the case.

Possible problems with payment

Since the system is still too young and is just beginning to be used normally, some failures and inconsistencies in operation are quite possible. Sometimes it happens that after money is credited, it does not arrive in the account and the terminal screen, when checked, shows a zero balance. Often the culprit is a bank card or electronic account. These are the ones that ultimately have to be dealt with.

In some cases, problems occur with the card itself. In this case, you need to contact the service center to check. It is quite possible that the money arrived in the account, but was not transferred to the card itself due to a malfunction.

Advantages and disadvantages of the application

Connecting Troika to Apple Wallet is the best solution. The application has plenty of advantages, for example:

  1. Apple Pay is a fairly secure service. No one can withdraw funds from linked cards. During transactions, no one sees the means of payment, since it does not have to be taken out. Real card numbers are also not displayed. It is also worth considering that before making a payment, to activate the service you need to undergo authentication by touching your finger. An outsider cannot do this, since there are no identical papillary patterns.
  2. Loss of a payment instrument is excluded. You don't need to carry all your cards in your wallet; you can put them in a safe place at home.
  3. You can combine all the cards into one application. Up to 8 cards can be loaded into Apple Pay.
  4. Save time. Payments via smartphone occur in a matter of seconds. The user only needs to unlock the gadget and bring it to the terminal. The need to look for a card, get change, etc. fades into the background.

The list of advantages tempts many, but the disadvantages cannot be avoided. These exist always and everywhere, and the Vallet app is no exception.

The disadvantages include:

  1. Complete dependence on the smartphone and its charging. If the gadget does not work well or is discharged, then you will not be able to use Apple Pay. Troika on iPhone in this case will not be available. Many people are frightened by such situations, especially when there is no cash on hand. You have to monitor the condition of your phone and carry a charger with you, which not everyone likes.
  2. Not all places in the city may have terminals with NFC. The absence of such reading devices indicates the impossibility of using the contactless service. There's nothing you can do about it; you'll have to pay by card or cash.

How to remove a card from Apple Pay?

Everyone decides for themselves whether it is convenient for them to use the troika via NFC and iPhone. You should first weigh the pros and cons.

Pay Troika for travel

By using the card's services, all clients will be able to quickly and without queues pay for travel in the metro, as well as ground public transport in Moscow and the Moscow region. An ordinary mobile gadget that supports NFC technology turns into a universal mobile ticket.

It is easy to record any subscription on a transport medium for use on commuter trains on all railway routes.

Payment for travel and passage through the turnstile occurs using a reading device. At the top of the turnstile there is a special yellow circle, to which you just need to hold your smartphone and hold it for a few seconds to read the information. The fare is automatically deducted from the balance of the travel subscription, in accordance with the rules of the current tariff system.

Something to remember! To fully carry out contactless payment for travel through a transport application, there must be a sufficient amount of funds on the main account of the transport card, not less than the cost of one journey.

Automations remain in the section of the same name and do not appear in the “My commands” section

Step 1. Open the “Teams” application.

Step 2. Go to the “Automation” section of the program.

Step 3. Determine the automation that needs to be changed.

Step 4. Select the list of tasks in the “To Do” menu.

Step 5. Use the ㊉ button to add one or more additional tasks, as well as the ⓧ button to remove it.

Step 6. Click the “Back” button to return to the previous menu, as well as the “Done” button to save the change.

What is the map?

A transport card is a plastic product that can be used to pay for trips on the subway, on commuter trains and in public transport.

It can be purchased at metro ticket offices and kiosks of Moscow public transport. The cost of the card is its deposit price, which will be returned to you if you return the plastic. There is a possibility for replenishment, the amount does not “burn out”, the maximum limit is no more than three thousand rubles. When used in transport, the base fare is debited.

It is allowed to purchase travel tickets at a higher cost without putting additional money on the card. After you pay the cost of the travel pass, the cashier writes it onto your Troika card.

The card balance is checked at the terminal of any metro station or in your personal account on the official website.

Structurally, the card is represented by a Mifare Plus chip operating in SL 1 mode. On the back of the plastic there is a ten-digit number used for remote replenishment of the balance. It is also used as an element for identification in the access control system.

Which travel card is more profitable in Moscow 2021?

Buying a single ticket for 90 and 365 days is much more profitable

than buying 30 days every month. Unlimited tickets have a limitation - repeated entry is possible after some time: for a ticket for 1-3 days - after 20 minutes; on a ticket for 30, 90 and 365 days - in 7 minutes.

What types of “Troikas” are there?

Transport cards are issued in the form of cards, bracelets, key rings and rings.

Cards

The designs are different, but the main one is blue.

Troika cards are available with different designs. They cost 50 rubles .

There is a real hunt for rare cards. For example, they wanted to sell a card with the number “10,000,000”, which symbolized the number of Troikas issued, for 1.8 million rubles, but there were no buyers. However, you can often buy a rare card from your own hands for 5-10 thousand rubles.

All other options are considered souvenirs, but they perform their functions properly. Bracelets, keychains and rings are sold at souvenir kiosks.

Keychains

Convenient item with good range. And it's harder to lose.

Key rings made of durable plastic can be worn on keys. There are many design options, the official price of the keychain is 300 rubles.

The trick: the key fob can be ground off and placed under the iPhone case, and then it’s convenient to “pay with your smartphone” at the turnstiles. Read more in our article.

Bracelets

Somewhat similar to bracelets from Apple Watch. It's a shame they're incompatible.

Troika bracelets were first shown on September 10, 2022. Then volunteers distributed them for free in honor of the city day. Later, bracelets began to be sold for 450 rubles.

Rings

The strangest accessory, and the price cannot be explained at all.

Troika rings are the strangest option. It will cost 2200 rubles. Waterproof: withstands up to 20 atmospheres.

Unfortunately, it's actually made of plastic. The turnstiles respond to it slowly. There are complaints that on buses it does not work the first time.

Pass office in Telegram

In order not to teach a new administrator each time how to use the controller’s web interface, we decided to create a Telegram bot through which passes will be added/removed. This is possible thanks to the presence of the BOREY REST API in the controller.

First, what will you need for this whole thing?

This is the iPhone 11, which, among other things, is suitable for working with NFC tags, but much older models of Apple smartphones supporting iOS 13 can also be used for this.

iPhone. An Apple smartphone with support for iOS 13 and an NFC module is suitable - this is the iPhone SE, as well as iPhone 6s (Plus) and higher. Despite the fact that the manufacturer began using this technology in the iPhone 6 (Plus), it does not have support for the necessary application for automation, more on that later. By the way, the iPad also has an NFC module, but it is cut off. It is used to pay for online purchases via Apple Pay - it is needed for the safety of this procedure. But it does not have antennas, so full use for reading NFC tags is out of the question.

Note that Commands and Shortcuts are two different versions of Apple's automation app: the first runs on iOS 13 and is NFC-compatible, the second runs on iOS 12 and is not NFC-compatible.

"Teams". A proprietary Apple application that is designed to automate routine processes. It grew out of Workflow, which the company bought several years ago. In iOS 13, this tool is installed by default and is tightly integrated into the operating system. On gadgets running iOS 12, you can only install the “Short Commands” application - the previous version of “Commands”. It is also suitable for a wide variety of action chains, but does not support “Automation”, which activates a task sequence after “encountering” a trigger. One of them will be an NFC tag.

The “Troika” card will be an excellent NFC tag for the iPhone - it can be used to launch the automation specified in “Teams”

NFC tag. It could be Troika or another card with an NFC chip built into it. Bank services that support PayPass are also suitable, as I already wrote about above. You can order separate NFC tags, and also use gadgets with such chips as a trigger - for example, Sony WF-1000XM3 headphones. In them, it is built into the charging case and is designed for quick connection to an Android smartphone. After the release of iOS 13, you can also implement this feature on iPhone, but to do this you will have to dance with a tambourine for a few minutes and set up automation in the “Teams” application.

What to do next: How to use NFC tags with iPhone

Hurray, the NFC tag worked!

To do this, just attach an NFC tag, which can even be “Troika,” to the back of the iPhone. If in the 11th step of the previous paragraph the “Ask before launch” switch is switched to the active position, a prompt will appear on the smartphone screen to execute the command specified by the tag.

If you opted out of the need for confirmation, the specified sequence of actions will occur automatically immediately after contact with the NFC tag. At the same time, a notification will also appear on the screen, which will briefly tell you that the tag was successfully recognized.

By the way, Troika does an excellent job of being an NFC tag. The iPhone recognizes it and performs the specified list of tasks 99% of the time. In all the time I've been using this feature, I've only had one unfortunate incident where the tag didn't work. But then the test version of iOS that I am using decided to freeze on its own.

Northwind controller

The controller is a device to which the card identifier is transmitted from the reader. It stores a database of card IDs and decides who is allowed in and who is not by controlling the door lock.

Often ACS controllers consist of several control units and a computer with a database. We fundamentally did not want to keep a separate computer and were looking for a compact solution in the form of a single device that can be controlled via an API for integration with a Telegram bot.

The search for such a device took more than a month until I came across an old article on Habré “Review of ACS with free software.” In the comments, user rgmih mentioned that their company produces just such a controller.

This is how we found the BOREY controller from ITRIUM.

BOREY controller board in a wall-mounted case

The device runs Linux based on an ARM processor.

The main advantages of the device, which are rarely found in other controllers:

  • Fully autonomous - all functions are performed by one device. No additional programs or separate computer are needed for control. The database is stored on an SD card. If the Internet is disconnected, the controller will continue to work.
  • Web interface and REST API - the ability to control the controller via a browser and integrate with the Telegram bot via the API. Allows you to manage passes remotely.
  • Ethernet connection—the device is connected to an IP network. Has a built-in switch for 2 ports.
  • Identifiers of arbitrary length up to 64 bits - the ability to integrate a controller with non-standard identifiers of different lengths. Allows you to have a hybrid system with IDs of different lengths.

At the moment of reading the card, the reader transmits the read card identifier to the controller via the Wiegand protocol. The controller looks up the identifier in its database and decides whether this identifier can open the door or not.

If possible, the controller opens the magnetic lock relay on the door and sends a light and sound indication signal to the reader. The reader emits an approving squeak and lights up green.

If access is denied, the controller sends an indication signal to the reader, and it lights up red and beeps that access is not allowed.

The controller is connected to the network using an Ethernet cable. The initial setup only requires setting the device's IP address. No software other than a browser is required.

Accounts . To avoid entering the card ID manually, you can bring it to the reader at the time of creating an account.

Creating a new pass in the BOREY controller web interface

The web interface allows you to manage your establishment remotely from any device and monitor the event log without being at your workplace. Even if the controller’s connection to the Internet is lost, this will not disrupt its operation, since the entire database is stored locally, and the Internet is only needed to make changes.

How to activate money on the troika on the bus?

To activate the deposited amount of money, you need to go to a special yellow device in the metro - an information terminal and use it to activate:

  1. Click “Remote card replenishment”.
  2. Bring the Troika to the scanner (circle at the bottom of the device).
  3. Information about the deposited funds and expiration dates will appear on the screen.

Processing pdol (processing options data object list)

In response to launching the payment application, the card may request a PDOL (Processing Options Data Object List) from the reader. This is a set of POS terminal parameters - supported protocols and standards, currency in which payments will be made, date, random number for cryptography, and so on.

The PDOL list may vary from card to card. The total number of PDOL parameters is several dozen. The full list of PDOL parameters can be found here: eftlab.co.uk/index.php/site-map/knowledge-base/145-emv-nfc-tags. The difficulty is that the PDOL list is for different cards, even those issued by the same bank at different times may vary significantly. Some cards require two or three parameters, others - a dozen.

This is a very important point, as some cards may refuse to work without a correct PDOL response. Therefore, to obtain the PAN number from all cards, we will have to pretend to be a real POS terminal. Let me remind you that our only goal is to obtain a PAN number. Therefore, we will try to generate the simplest, but at the same time correct, PDOL response.

The card's response to the start of the payment application. Contains a PDOL request.

Let's run this answer through

parser

It can be seen that the PDOL value starts at marker 9F38 and is equal to 9F66049F02069F03069F1A0295055F2A029A039C019F3704. The emvlab.org parser cannot parse PDOL values, so we will use the Credit Card Reader program for Android smartphones.

Here is the same answer, processed by a smarter parser. Each PDOL parameter is visible:

This parser does not hide the length byte after the marker, as emvlab.org does. Therefore, the last byte of each token should be read as length.
