In this article I will tell you why there is no sound on the iPhone when receiving an incoming call or receiving an SMS. Let's figure out what settings need to be made to restore functionality to the phone.

This article is suitable for all iPhone 13/12/11/X/8/7 and Plus models running iOS 15. Older versions may have different or missing menu items and hardware support listed in the article.

Let's go from simple to complex.

  • There is no sound because... it's disabled
  • A reboot is required for sound to appear.
  • "Do not disturb" option activated
  • Checking the sound settings
  • Headset mode started incorrectly
  • Solving the problem using AssistiveTouch
  • Erase content and reset settings
  • Mechanical problems

There is no sound because... it's disabled

Despite the fact that the iPhone is a fairly reliable gadget, users sometimes experience that the melody suddenly disappears when receiving an incoming call or SMS.

Often the ringtone stops playing because the iPhone has been switched to silent mode. Of course, this explanation is quite simple, but in most cases it is the one that becomes correct, especially for new device owners.

To solve this problem, you need to check the volume switch on the left side of the iPhone. If this switch is set to silent mode, then you just need to move it. When there is an incoming call, the music will play again.

Speaker failure

In most cases, breakdown occurs after a mechanical impact on the gadget’s body - during a fall or a strong impact.

  • If you can’t hear the other person while talking on your IPhone 6, make sure that the phone has not been dropped or left in the sun for a long time. Due to overheating, board components can be seriously damaged and stop performing their functions.
  • The sound disappears even after liquid gets inside the smartphone. In iPhone 6, the sound module is protected by a thin mesh that does not protect the speaker from water.

A reboot is required for sound to appear.

When the volume switch is in the required position, but the melody still does not sound, your gadget may need a reboot. Performing a reboot will solve the software errors that caused the ringtone to disappear. To do this, you need to press and hold the Home and Power buttons at the same time until the apple logo is displayed.

If the disappearance of sound is due to a software error, then after such a reboot it should appear again.

Why the sound disappeared on the iPhone: what to do

Problems with sound are not always a factory defect; often the cause of such a problem is the owner’s incorrect actions or the installation of third-party applications that cause failures.

Sound settings

It would be a good idea to check the volume, which may be reduced due to negligence.

Settings errors

When the sound on the iPhone suddenly disappears, most people try to remember whether this could have caused the breakdown, forgetting about the settings of the device itself and the microphone. Often, by accident, they were changed, as a result of which the sound now does not work.

  • Silent mode. The most common mistake made by users who have only recently become owners of such equipment. Developers and designers have tried to simplify the process of how to disable silent mode on an iPhone. There is a separate button for this, located on the side. This is often forgotten, especially in the first days of using the phone. However, as a result, the device can only vibrate when calling. To check whether this is the reason, you can carefully look at the button: the red line inside indicates silent mode. We need to put it in a different position. Another test option is to try to play any melody in the player. It will turn on with sound.
  • Setting error. Sometimes the user notices that the sound only disappears on the call on the iPhone. However, music playback is not affected by this. This behavior of the phone indicates a failure in the notification settings. You can find them in the “Sounds” tab. In the third line you will see a line that indicates the volume level. Moving the pointer to the right will make it larger. Additionally, you can set permission to change the volume using buttons, which will help you not to return to this item in the future.

External connections

Sometimes the cause is third-party devices that play sound, but not through the phone's built-in speaker. It looks like it's broken, but it's not.

Important! An external wireless connection is visible in the player when playing music. It is displayed by an icon in the upper right corner of the icon in the form of a tower with spheres radiating from it.

  • External speaker. Sometimes additional means are used to play music - speakers, wireless headphones. They establish a connection via Bluetooth, which is not always visible. To eliminate such an error, you will need to turn off the function or activate airplane mode. After this, you need to re-enter normal mode and repeat the operation check.
  • Connected headphones. The most obvious reason for a non-working speaker is connecting external headphones through the corresponding jack. To fix it, just pull them out.

System errors

In some cases, the lack of sound is a system error that can be corrected without intervention. To check if this is the cause, a reboot is needed. On the top panel you need to press and hold the activation button. A prompt to turn off will appear on the screen, which is done after dragging the slider to the appropriate position. Switching on is carried out by the same holding.

Additionally, you can try more drastic measures - resetting the settings. It is performed through the “Settings” menu, where the “Reset” sub-item is hidden in the last line of the “General” item. To reset to original settings, you will need to reset all settings. After this, the personal data saved in the phone will remain, and the settings will be updated to factory settings.

Also, sometimes a problem occurs when launching a certain application: the sound starts to disappear or disappears immediately. If the problem is not in silent mode, then most likely the problem will not disappear until a new version of the program is released. You will either have to remove it or put up with a malfunction.

Note! The sound of a malfunctioning application can sometimes be adjusted - reduced or increased. To do this, you should try the volume control buttons.

"Do not disturb" option activated

When the ringtone on your iPhone stops working, you need to check if the “Do Not Disturb” option is activated. By mistake, users often activate this mode without noticing it. When a crescent-shaped icon is displayed at the top of the screen, it means that the Do Not Disturb mode on the gadget is turned on. It turns off all sound notifications.

This problem can be solved very simply, just follow these steps:

  • Swipe your finger across the screen from bottom to top.
  • Open “Control Center”.
  • Turn off the mode.

After this, the sound signal should appear again.

How to turn on sound on iPhone

No sound on Android phone - what to do

You don’t have to think long about how to turn on sound on your iPhone, since its creators took care of the convenience and accessibility of the function. Only one external button located on the left side of the case will help with this. To turn on sounds and notifications, you will need to move it to the top position, and turning it off will require the opposite action. Changing the mode to Silent is indicated by a short notification on the screen.

Unmute

In this state, the device will only turn off calls and notifications, and only on the built-in speaker. The headset or wireless speaker will play a ringtone when the unit receives a call. Playing music and application sounds is also not limited, and is not controlled at startup. To remove voiceover, you will need to launch the program and manually adjust it using the lower sound key or turn it off in the settings.

Note! You can check the shutdown using the lines of the mute button - the red line indicates silent mode.

Checking the sound settings

It is possible that problems with the ringtone occurred due to incorrect sound settings.

  • Open “Settings”.
  • There we select the “Sounds” menu.
  • Set the appropriate notification and ringtone volume.
  • Turn on “Change with buttons”.

This will allow you to adjust the volume of the melody using the volume buttons, which are located on the left side of the iPhone.

IPhone motherboard problems

The lack of sound can be caused not only by a malfunction of the speaker itself, but also by damage to other chips and components. For example, in iPhone 4 it might not work due to poor contact of the cable connectors with the board.

In addition, after liquid gets in, oxidation of the contacts of the microcircuits occurs, which often causes their failure. The sound module itself may lose the necessary contact with the board after being dropped.

Headset mode started incorrectly

When the above methods do not help solve problems with no sound during SMS and incoming calls, then the problem is more complex. For example, your device may have been left in headset mode by mistake. You can check this in the Music application or using the “Control Center”, where you need to click on the “Devices” icon.

Then we try to connect and disconnect the headphones several times, carefully clean the Lightning connector with a toothpick and restart the iPhone.

How to set vibration on iPhone

To enable your phone to ring with vibration, you can not only activate it, but also configure it. To do this, you will need to go to the already familiar settings item called “Sounds, tactile signals.” In the lower block you can connect not only a specific notification, but also a vibration pattern. However, this will have to be done for each individual position. In any of the points, the phone with standard settings will show the “Default” mode in the top line. By clicking on it, the user will be taken to a list of standard views. You can choose any one among them. You can also create a vibration yourself in the “Custom” line.

Create vibration

If desired, you can create a vibration signal that is almost continuous or consists of many short dots by setting it as selected. After this, when the user receives an SMS, the message will be accompanied by the selected picture.

Solving the problem using AssistiveTouch

  • Go to the “Settings” section, select “General” and “Accessibility”.

  • Increase

  • Select the AssistiveTouch menu.

  • Increase

  • Set the AssistiveTouch value to the active state. The screen will display a button that is responsible for working with this function.

  • Increase

  • Click on the AssistiveTouch button and select “Device” in the window that opens.
  • Increase

  • Set the sound parameter to “On.” Sound". Then use the “Louder” button to set the volume to maximum.
  • Increase

  • We make approximately 30 – 40 calls to our gadget.

One of the calls made should return your iPhone to full functionality. If this does not happen, then the problem is most likely a technical one.

Understanding the volume control

In some cases, the sound in the iPhone disappears somehow one-sidedly - in applications it is there, but when making a call it is absent. The opposite situation may also occur when there is silence in applications, but there is silence in calls. What to do? Try “playing” with the volume control in running applications, and also check the status of the current sound profile - it is quite possible that sound output is simply disabled in the active profile.

If all else fails, and there is still no sound in the iPhone, we send the smartphone to reboot - the sound settings will have to be reset, after which the sound will still appear.

Erase content and reset settings

Increase

This option should only be used in extreme situations. To delete all content on the gadget and reset settings, go to the “Settings” menu, select “General”, then “Reset” and “Erase content and settings”. We make sure that before resetting, a backup copy of the data on the gadget was made using iCloud or iTunes.

Sound card cable failure

After a fall, the cable on the chip may become disconnected from the connector or be physically damaged. If the iPhone speaker stops working, do not rush to disassemble the device - this will only remove the manufacturer’s warranty obligations, and will not fix the problem. Any repair procedures for the main board and its components should be trusted only by trusted Apple specialists.

Important! Be wary of cheap “masters” working in markets and small shops. Spare parts and repairs from such specialists are cheaper, but no one gives a guarantee that the smartphone will work properly.

Mechanical problems

If there is no sound on your iPhone when making a call, and the methods listed above did not fix the error, you need to contact a service center. Diagnostics will help determine the reasons why there is no sound:

  • Speaker damage. The problem occurs as a result of a blow or fall. Eliminated by replacing this element.
  • Audio channel is dirty. When you actively use your phone for a long time, small debris can clog its audio channel. Problems can be resolved by carefully cleaning the audio channel.
  • Problems with the sound chip. It can simply fall off under mechanical stress. It needs to be replaced, and if it is not damaged, then simply solder the original chip back.
  • The headphone jack is damaged or dirty. The problem is eliminated by replacement or cleaning, depending on the diagnostic results.

There may also be problems with other components. For example, the problem may be in the operation of the cable that is responsible for the functioning of the speaker. To diagnose the causes and troubleshoot problems, you should visit a service center.

Sound button on iPhone doesn't work

The volume button may get stuck, especially if the phone has been dropped or gotten wet shortly before. In this case, you can check its functionality by simply pressing. At this time, a characteristic click should sound. If it is not there, the problem is mechanical in nature, and the phone will have to be taken to a service center for repair.

The button doesn't work

If the operation is not disrupted, you should restart the device or reset the settings to factory settings. To do this, in the phone settings section you need to find the “Basic” item. The very last line will have the required reset tab. Once the process is completed, the problem usually disappears.

The sound on an iPhone can disappear for various reasons: from careless changes in settings to mechanical problems in the device. In some cases, you can correct the situation yourself, but sometimes contacting the service is a necessary measure.
