How to set up NFC for paying with a Sberbank card from your phone

NFC (near field communication) is a technology that allows you to make contactless payments using a smartphone. Are you used to paying for purchases in stores with contactless plastic cards? Now this is the last century, it’s time to switch to new technology that allows you to pay by phone. Let's look at how to set up NFC for payment through Sberbank.

Sberbank contactless card - what is it?

A card with remote payment from Sberbank is no different in appearance from conventional payment instruments. What makes it contactless is the built-in board with NFS. The presence of a chip is indicated by a wave-shaped icon. This card can be used as a tool for:

  • storing money;
  • payment for purchases at retail outlets and on websites;
  • transfer of funds.

You will not have to enter your PIN code during payment. You just need to touch your banking instrument to a terminal that supports PayPass or PayWave and wait. The required amount will be read in a split second.

Is it possible to pay using SberPay on the Internet and in mobile applications?

Today, many users make purchases exclusively online. To do this, they need to be paid for, and the Sberpay service is quite suitable for these purposes. All payments are made without entering a card number or code from SMS. Thus, clients are additionally protected from fraudulent activities.

If you use a smartphone to pay for the order, you need to click on the Sberpay icon and open the Sberbank online application. To enter it you will need authorization, after which all you have to do is click on the “Pay” button.

When paying for purchases from your computer, you will also have to click on the Sberpay icon to open Sberbank online. In this case, authorization is performed using the phone number to which the notification is sent. Next, click the payment button.

Another useful feature of Sberpay is the ability to withdraw money from an ATM if you don’t have a bank card. To do this, the smartphone is applied to the reader, after which all you have to do is enter the card PIN code.

What is the feature and who is it available to?

NFC stands for Near Field Communication. This is a relatively young technology, the essence of which is that it provides communication between devices at high frequencies and over short distances. Thanks to NFC technology, it is possible to wirelessly transfer information in a secure mode, provided by a limited range. Signals are transmitted and read within a few seconds.

It is impossible to intercept the signal. Its contents contain no information about the media, which ensures complete confidentiality of the process.

Users who own mobile phones with a built-in NFC module can use contactless payment technology. It is provided in the latest generation smartphones. You can make sure that your device is open for synchronization with a Sberbank card:

  1. Open the “Settings” section of your device.
  2. Go to the “Wireless Networks” subsection. This could also be the “More” section.
  3. Study the list of functions. If it has NFC, your device supports the technology.

It makes sense to switch to the option, as it has a number of important advantages:

  • provided free of charge;
  • there is no need to wear bonus plastic, since information about discounts is available in the application;
  • payments are reliable and secure;
  • transactions are completed in a fraction of a second.

The essence of contactless technology

Contactless payment is a payment during which a card is not needed at all. It is enough to download the desired mobile application, “link” a card to it and present the smartphone to the bank terminal. A sound signal is given when the transaction is completed (connection speed is 1 second).

All this is only possible if the phone has a built-in NFC module with a connected application. Internet is not required to make a payment.

Difference from a regular transaction:

  • you don’t have to use the card;
  • faster operation (without lengthy identification and hanging connection with the bank);
  • no PIN code required;
  • only possible in terminals with contactless technology.

NFC (stands for and translates as near-field communication).
You can link any number of cards to one smartphone and pay for purchases contactlessly from any card account. You cannot configure NFS. The chip is either located on the back of the phone or it is not. You just need to turn it on.

Separately, you can purchase tags with different amounts of memory , on which you can record different information and use it to perform different tasks (various programs are used for recording, for example, NFC Tools or NFC Tasks). Using NFC, you can not only pay for purchases, but also automatically turn off WI-FI, alarm clock, sound, get directions and much more.

The advantages of such technology, which has existed since 2003, are that money is debited instantly and safely, and the application stores all discounts and accumulated bonuses, which often affect the price of the product. You will have to turn on your phone every time you make a payment.

IMPORTANT! You can use your phone only in places where there is a contactless payment terminal. The disadvantage in this case is the risk of the phone battery draining at the most inopportune moment or the device being stolen along with all the data.

Compatibility check

To enable contactless payments, you must install Android Pay. Before you find out how to connect NFC Sberbank, make sure that your smartphone or tablet supports the technology. How to do it? You can find out about the presence of an NFC chip in Xiaomi Redmi or Samsung on the back cover of the device or battery in the form of the “N” logo or the inscription “Near field communication”. In addition, NFC support is indicated in the device description or technical description on the website.

Activating NFC on Android

Before you learn how to connect NFC for Sberbank payments, you need to enable the function on your phone:

  1. Open the "Settings" section.
  2. Click on the “More” item.
  3. Find the NFC line and activate the option.

That’s it, the device is ready to make payments using a smartphone, not a card.

Which iPhones support the technology?

You can also use the following iPhones for contactless payment:

  • 6, 6S, 6S Plus;
  • 7, 7 Plus;
  • 8, 8 Plus;
  • X, XS, XS MAX;
  • XR;
  • SE and other advanced models.

It should also be clarified that the iPhone 5 and 5 S do not have an NFC module, but when paired with a watch they can also be used for contactless payments. To find out if your smartphone has an NFS module, just go to the device settings, open “additional functions” and view the contents. If NFC is not listed, contactless technology is not supported.

If there is an NFS module in the phone, there will be a shortcut. It should be in the quick access menu. The presence of a microchip is also indicated by the corresponding logo (NFC). It is usually located on the back cover of the gadget. The adapter itself is inside the phone. For those who do not want to look for information about the module in the phone itself, simply ask the seller for the characteristics of the smartphone. This technology will definitely be mentioned in it.

More information about the possibility of paying by phone

NFC (near field communication) is a contactless near field communication through which information is exchanged between devices. The NFS module has recently begun to be implemented in many smartphones, which makes it possible to use the phone during monetary transactions. An unlocked mobile phone must be placed at a distance of no more than 10 cm from the POS terminal. In a matter of seconds, funds will be debited from your account.

You can pay by phone at:

  • shops;
  • hairdressing salons;
  • metro and other public transport;
  • Internet;
  • salons, etc.

If your smartphone does not have a microchip, you can replace it with a built-in NFS antenna. iPhone owners have the opportunity to buy an Apple Watch and use two devices together.

Before linking a card to a service, make sure that the bank is its issuer. It is also important to choose the appropriate payment instrument. Not all cards support one or another contactless system.

What to do if payment via NFC does not work

There are quite a few reasons. Moreover, they appear like mushrooms after rain. Especially recently, characterized by an increase in the number of model names using this option.

I suggest errors and troubles wandering around the forums, from which a way out was found. Perhaps this will help someone.

  1. Simple jambs. Here are the shortcomings and errors of the user himself.
      The battery charge is low, less than 5%, the transaction will not be possible.
  2. The balance on the linked card does not allow payment.
  3. NFC chip is disabled in settings.
  4. There is no required logo on the terminal, and you are breaking into a closed gate.
  5. And the card of your bank, that... Not supported.
  6. Software errors.
      The application does not want to install? There may be several reasons, from geopolitical to trivial. Alternatively, check the availability of RAM in the device. And also look on Google, is your country an adherent of it?
  7. If the payment does not go through for some unknown reason, it is not classified, there is a way out. Try doing a so-called software reset. Remove the linked card from your account and register it there again. Sometimes it helps.
  8. Does not connect to the payment system. Restart the application, there may be glitches in the utility itself.
  9. Technical. Error 56 is known in the Apple Pay app.

    Indicates that the NFC module is faulty. In addition, there are cases when an incorrectly oriented device with a chip refuses to work with retail equipment. Try changing the position of the phone.

I’ll end here, since the article is not flexible and it will not be possible to fit everything here. Look for a simple solution; you will think about a complex one only in case of failure.

Payment Process

There are certain differences in how to pay for NFC through Sberbank using a smartphone on iOS or Android. In the first case you need:

  1. Unlock your mobile device and bring it to a payment terminal that supports the function of accepting contactless transactions. If there is an antenna icon on the device, this option is available. If the user does not know what the designation looks like, he can clarify the information with the cashier.
  2. Before putting your smartphone away, you need to wait for a signal confirming data transfer. This usually takes 2-5 seconds.
  3. Confirm the transaction with your fingerprint or by entering your PIN.

As for how to transfer funds through Google Play, just follow the instructions:

  1. Activate your smartphone.
  2. Bring your phone to the terminal.
  3. Wait for the checkmark to appear confirming the payment.

The NFC module can be used in various situations:

  • payment for purchases;
  • payment for utilities;
  • payment for travel by credit card in Izhevsk, Moscow or any other city;
  • using the card in other countries. For example, NFC is available at BPS Sberbank.

Depending on the card type and purchase price, you may be required to enter a PIN. Up to what amount no additional actions need to be performed depends on the contractual provisions. Usually its size does not exceed 1 thousand rubles.

Before you touch your card to the terminal for payment, you must first decide on the account that will be responsible for transferring funds.

How to connect SberPay

The SberPay application is not available in the Play Market. It is initially located in the Sberbank online application. Many users were unable to detect it, although they only need to update the payment application on their phone to the latest version.

The general connection diagram will be as follows:

  • Log in to the mobile application.
  • Select and link a card to sberpay
  • Click the “Connect Sberpay” button.

How to enable SberPay on Android

Before you pay for purchases via NFS on Android, you need to make a number of settings. Registration in the service alone will not be enough; Sberpay must be chosen as the main payment instrument. The algorithm of actions on different models may differ slightly, but in general, there are no big differences.

Connecting and setting up Sberpay on Android is done in the following order:

  • Enter “Settings”, then “Connection”, then “Other connections”.
  • In the open NFC tab, find the “Default Application” item. It has Google Pay installed, which needs to be replaced with Sberpay.
  • Confirm the changes made.

How to enable SberPay on iPhone

SberPay is not currently available for use on iPhones. However, if desired, you can use alternative options.

In the first case, the Sberbank online application is used to set up contactless payment:

  • Download and run the utility.
  • Bank cards are linked according to the usual scheme.
  • Log in to the main menu. Select the desired bank card and click on it.
  • A window will open with a button to connect to the Apple Pay service. After clicking on it, it will be automatically transferred to the Wallet application, which is preinstalled on the iPhone.
  • All information and characteristics of the card will be transferred automatically.
  • All that remains is to confirm all the actions performed, and the card will be saved in the service.

The second connection method is carried out directly through the Wallet application. After launching it, click the button in the main menu to add a map. After this, it must be scanned or all data must be entered manually. The operation ends with confirmation and saving of the completed actions.

How to set up NFC for payment: step-by-step instructions

First of all, you should make sure that the following conditions are met:

  1. Phone with NFC chip. You can find out about its availability on the manufacturer’s website, in the instructions for the phone, by searching for the “NFC” item in the “Wireless Networks” settings section or by installing the “NFC Check” application.
  2. Suitable operating system: Android from version 4.4, iPhone from version 6.
  3. The opportunity must be supported by the bank. Now this should not be a problem: all major financial institutions have enabled the contactless payment function via smartphone.
  4. It is required that there are no additional interventions in the phone: you need original firmware, no root rights, Bootloader disabled. All of these options could only appear if you set them up and turned them on yourself, so you should know how to turn them off. I will not dwell on this in detail.

If everything is in order with these points, you can set up payment. As an example, I’ll tell you how to set up NFC for paying with a Sberbank card on an Android phone. For other banks, the procedure will be similar, and I will reveal the nuances for iPhone below.

Step 1: Enable NFC on your smartphone

Before you enable NFC on your device, you need to check whether you have the module, as described above. Next, you should configure it: go to “Wireless Networks” or “Additional Features” and click on the corresponding switch.

Step 2: choose a payment application

This option may be in Advanced Features or NFC Settings. Typically you use one of three apps: Google Pay, Apple Pay, and Samsung Pay. The latter is only available for top Samsung models. In our Android example, the application must be downloaded and installed on your device (usually select “Google Pay”. Remember that it is installed by default).

Step 3: Start adding a card

Now, to set up payment via NFC on Android, you need to enter your payment information once. I'll tell you about the full version of this stage. However, if you have a bank application installed (in this case, Sberbank), everything becomes much simpler. I'll talk about this below.

In general, open the Google Pay app. You will see a "+" sign. Click on it.

Step 4: Scan the card or enter the details manually

The application will prompt you to scan (take a photo) of the card. This is very convenient because it takes a few seconds. If for some reason the procedure does not work, then click on the inscriptions at the bottom of the screen and enter the data manually. At the very end, you need to double-check the data and enter the CVV2/CVC2 code located on the back of the card.

Step 5: Confirmation

Google will show the terms of use of the service, which you must accept by clicking on the button at the bottom of the screen. After this, the application will request confirmation from the bank. Usually it comes in the form of a code via SMS. Afterwards, you will receive a code via SMS, which you must enter in the appropriate field.

Step 6: Check and Set Default Card

The bank will send a confirmation via SMS, and in some cases a small amount will be debited from the account (up to 15 rubles, depending on the bank), which will then be returned to your account.

After confirmation, setting up NFC on your phone for payment is completed. You will see a list of cards, one of which you can set as default. Now you can start paying!

How does payment work?

To pay, just unlock the smartphone screen and bring it to the terminal, which accepts contactless payment. There is no need to open the application. When paying, the back panel of a smartphone or other gadget should be positioned parallel to the terminal display.

Basically, this technology is convenient for paying in stores. You most likely won’t be able to withdraw money from ATMs using your phone, because most of them do not support this function. The procedure takes only a few seconds. The phone must be woken from sleep mode and unlocked.

Any bank manager on the hotline will tell you how to use NFC on your phone to pay through Sberbank online.

Note: adding a card through the bank application

This option is much faster and more convenient. Install the official application, log in to it and in the properties of the desired card, click “Add to Google Pay”. After confirmation, you can go to the store and pay using your smartphone; you won’t need to configure anything additional.

Other payment methods with a smartphone with SberPay

This payment system allows you to perform many useful actions directly from your smartphone instead of a Sberbank card:

  • Checking the balance status on the card directly during the payment process.
  • When you contact the terminal, the currency used and the transaction amount are displayed on the phone monitor.
  • If the purchase amount via NFC exceeds the available funds on the card, a notification about this will immediately appear on the screen.
  • The external design of the application can be adapted to the design of the card itself.

How to pay using SberPay when launching from a terminal

How to pay for a purchase directly in the terminal:

  • To launch the Sberpay application, you need to bring your smartphone to the terminal.
  • The operation is confirmed by unlocking the screen in different ways.
  • View current information about this transaction and check your card balance directly on the screen.
  • To confirm payment from a Sberbank card, the smartphone must be brought to the terminal again. When the operation is completed, a beep will sound.

How to pay using SberPay when starting manually

In some cases, clients do not know how to make a manual payment when the Sberpay application does not open on its own on the terminal. This requires a few simple steps:

  • Press and hold the Sberbank online application icon. After this, SberPay will appear.
  • Press and drag the application icon to the main screen. A shortcut for manually starting the service will appear.
  • The operation is confirmed by unlocking the screen or using a fingerprint.
  • The smartphone is brought to the terminal, and payment occurs with one touch.

Connecting NFC Sberbank on iOS

To activate the NFC phone payment service on a smartphone running the iOS operating system, you must link a bank card. The procedure is simple and does not take much time.

NFC activation

A distinctive feature of NFC technology on the iOS system is that activation for iPhones version 6 and higher, including SE, is not required. Consequently, phone owners can immediately begin the procedure of linking a bank card using the specialized Wallet service.

Linking a card via Wallet

To link cards through the Wallet system, you should follow the instructions:

  1. You must activate the Touch ID and iCloud identification and security options.
  2. After this, you should start the Wallet service.
  3. At the top of the screen you need to find and activate the add function.
  4. At the next stage, payment details are indicated - if desired, you can take a photo of the front part (in this case, some of the data is filled in automatically).
  5. Next, you need to confirm the initials of the bank card owner, its validity period and indicate the CVV code.
  6. At the final stage, you must accept the terms of the user agreement.

Connection via Sber Online

To connect your mobile device to a contactless payment system, you need to perform a number of actions. Let's look at the example of a device running on Android OS:

  • install the Sberbank Online application on your phone (if you have not already done this at the card registration stage);
  • go to the program;
  • select the desired card;
  • Find the line “Add to Google Pay” at the bottom of the screen;

    “Add to Google Pay” option in the Sber Online app for Android

  • On the new page, click the “Connect G Pay” button.

Next, you just need to follow a few steps suggested by the system, and the setup will be completed.

Payment security

Making purchases using your phone is absolutely safe. The fact is that NFC technology only works within a small radius, making it impossible to intercept a transaction. In addition, when performing a transaction, bank data is not used; instead, the application uses a special code, which ensures complete confidentiality.

Now that you know how to set up your phone to pay with a Sberbank card, you can proceed to the setup procedure. To do this, you only need to have a smartphone that supports the option, as well as access to the Internet.

Through which system can you pay?

Currently, three of the world's largest payment systems have been launched in Russia, supporting the function of contactless payment from mobile phones. These include: Apple Pay, Android Pay and Samsung Pay. For the most part, all presented systems have the same technologies. However, each of them has its own differences, advantages and disadvantages. Let's take a closer look at each system:

Android Pay

Developed by Google and works only on smartphones with Android OS. Among the advantageous features are:

  • a large list of banks supporting the service;
  • the application has a built-in link for all bonuses and discounts;
  • promotions and bonus offers are held;
  • Works even on smartphones that do not have a fingerprint scanner.

Samsung Pay

The service is provided by Korean. Currently it is a serious competitor to all other manufacturers of similar functions. Has the following advantages:

  • lower price for mobile devices that support the option;
  • can be used on old payment terminals due to the imitation of a magnetic stripe;
  • a large number of partner banks than competitors.

The only downside worth noting is that transaction confirmation is only possible using a fingerprint scanner.

Apple Pay

The service was developed by Apple. Works only on iPhone, starting from version 6, as well as on Apple Watch and iPad. At the moment, Sberbank is the only Russian bank whose cards support the application. It has standard features that are also present in competitors. Among the disadvantages are noted:

  • a small number of partner banks;
  • high cost of devices that support the program;
  • works only on special terminals;
  • Payments can only be confirmed using a fingerprint scanner.

Refill

Understanding what a Sberbank wallet is allows you to top up your account without any problems, because many services have similar features. Judging by user reviews, the most convenient tools for depositing funds onto a card are as follows:

  • from virtual wallets;
  • through payment terminals;
  • from another card or account.

Before you pay for your purchase, you should initially check your account to ensure the transaction goes through without any problems.
