Not at all, and compared to last year’s iPhone X, there are even fewer accessories. Apple did not include a 3.5mm to Lightning adapter in the box for the iPhone XS Max. Because of this, you won’t be able to listen to music on the iPhone XS Max using your favorite headphones with a 3.5 mm connector; you’ll have to buy an adapter separately.

But the most unpleasant thing about the iPhone XS Max is the lack of a high-power charging adapter. Despite numerous rumors and analyst predictions, Apple ships the iPhone XS Max with a very basic 5W charger. Charging a smartphone using such an adapter will take as long as two hours.

If the buyer of the extremely expensive iPhone XS Max wants to use fast charging, which the smartphone supports, then he will need to buy a charging adapter and a special cable for it. All the necessary accessories will cost a little more than five thousand rubles.

Of course, we can say that for buyers of a smartphone costing more than one hundred thousand rubles, such expenses will be insignificant. However, these are all excuses - the lack of a modern charger included with the “most innovative smartphone of the year” frankly disappointed Apple fans.

Let's start with the most pressing question.

It's no secret that the price even for the minimum versions of the iPhone Xs and Xs Max is at least impressive. Compared to some Xiaomi Mi8 (an excellent device, by the way), the “ten-es” is prohibitively expensive. You immediately want to be indignant, break something, leave an angry comment online about officials, Trump and your drunk neighbor. But let's not get too excited. Let's make an analogy. And the automobile market will come to our aid.

There is such a wonderful car - Nissan X-Trail. Now it costs 1.8 million rubles in the top configuration. For this money we get a 2.5-liter engine and 171 horses under the hood, a leather interior, a bunch of sophisticated driving systems, a million sensors, good music, and so on. The car is modern, charged and looks great on the road.

And also found in nature, for example, BMW X6. For him in the top you will have to pay 6.2 million rubles. For the same money you can buy 3.5 pieces of “hitril”.

How did they name the new 6.5-inch Apple smartphone before the presentation? Over the course of the year, various names were predicted for the new product, ranging from iPhone 11 Plus to something completely unusual like iPhone Pro. However, Apple actually had plans to name the new products in a non-standard way.

As indicated by the leak three weeks before the presentation, the 6.5-inch Apple smartphone of the 2022 model was called iPhone XS Max. For the first time, Apple changed the prefix “Plus” to “Max” in its smartphones. This is explained by the fact that with this name the company emphasizes the enlarged display of the smartphone. If the “Plus” models always had a 5.5-inch display, then the iPhone XS Max has a much larger one - 6.5 inches.

In addition, the name indicates that the iPhone XS Max is an already improved s version of the original iPhone X. The smartphone is not a representative of a completely new generation. By the way, according to rumors, the next full-fledged new generation of iPhone is planned only for 2022, and there will be a huge number of improvements in the new products.

The name iPhone XS Max sounds unusual to the ear. The smartphone must be called “iPhone Ten S Max” - this is the official version of Apple. But Apple fans, of course, will call the model differently. In Russia, a name like “iks es max” may catch on.

Exterior

The Xs Max is a wild mixture of the iPhone X and 8 Plus. The new product turned out to be a shovel, but at the same time the screen spread over the entire front surface. And that's cool. Very!

Xs Max is the wet dream of the owner of any Plus. The smartphone is very large, with a huge, gorgeous screen, and hardly fits into a narrow jeans pocket. This is how you can describe your first impression.

If you have a large man's hand, then operating the device with one hand can be relatively painless. However, even with long fingers, reaching the top edge is not easy. You have to either intercept the device, which runs the risk of introducing the smartphone to the asphalt, or connect your second hand. However, ladies with miniature hands will have to use two hands constantly.

Surprisingly, the “ten-es-max” began to slide less.

It is not as slippery as the previous ten and, especially, the metal 7 and 7 Plus. Firstly, fingers cling better to glass than to matte metal. Secondly, the steel frame around the perimeter changed the coating. Previously, it was as smooth and slippery as possible. Now it has retained its gloss, but has improved its sliding properties. It's difficult to describe, but it feels like the frame is slightly rubberized. If you run your finger along the board with force, you will hear a characteristic squeak from friction. There is no such thing on a regular ten.

New color for everyone. I prefer the white version, but I specifically chose the gold one to show off the new color in all its glory.

Despite the name, the color is more reminiscent of copper than gold. It gets very dark indoors. The background fades into light colors, so it looks more like gold.

I really like the mirrored edges. They play beautifully as sunbeams in the light. True, fingerprints are collected no less willingly. It's a double-edged sword.

Design

And if briefly? In terms of design, the iPhone XS Max differs from its predecessor iPhone X only in its significantly increased size and new gold color of the case. Otherwise, this is a very familiar smartphone.

The fact that the iPhone XS Max is a direct successor to the iPhone X is clear at first glance. The design of the smartphone is practically no different from the “ten”. The model has a body, traditional for Apple smartphones, rounded at the corners, made of two glass panels and a stainless steel frame between them. The glass is protective, and in the iPhone XS Max their protective properties have been improved compared to the iPhone X.

The connecting frame is highly scratch resistant. There have been a few complaints about a similar frame in the iPhone X, alleging that the frame was gradually peeling off. Despite the fact that there were few such reviews, Apple still improved this component. Just in case. The color on the iPhone XS Max case was applied using a unique PVD coating method, which allows you to achieve a glossy effect.

The overall shape of the iPhone XS Max has not changed compared to the iPhone X. The body, as before, feels slightly elongated. This feeling arises due to the full-length display with minimal frames, which is record-breakingly large on the iPhone XS Max. The enlarged body of the smartphone should not negatively affect ease of use. The dimensions of the iPhone XS Max are only slightly larger than those of the iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 8 Plus and amount to 157.5 x 77.4 x 7.7 mm. Smartphone weight: 208 g.

Essentially, the iPhone XS Max is the iPhone 8 Plus, but with a modern display with seriously reduced bezels. Last year, the same definition applied to the iPhone X. The smartphone was only slightly different in size from the iPhone 8, but because of the new display it looked completely different.

Literally on the entire front surface of the iPhone XS there is a huge 6.5-inch display with minimal frames. The screen looks really big - Apple smartphones have never had displays of this size before. The company managed to enlarge the display and maintain acceptable dimensions by reducing the frames. The side and bottom frames suffered the most - they are barely noticeable. The top frame is made in the style of the iPhone X. It is an “island” with large cutouts on the sides.

The arrangement of elements on the iPhone XS Max body is standard. On the right side there is a power button and a SIM card tray, on the left there are volume buttons and a sound mode switch. At the bottom end of the grille there are speakers and a traditional Lightning connector. Apple did not switch to USB-C, even though there were prerequisites for this. The top end is empty.

The overall design of the iPhone XS Max is identical to last year's iPhone X, but Apple has made sure that the smartphone is recognizable by its size alone. The iPhone XS Max came out in three colors: gray, silver and a completely new gold. The company has never used such a gold color in its devices. Compared to the previously used gold color, the new color is more saturated.

Sound

The new generation has upgraded the external sound. The sound became louder and richer. At least that's what it says. But I only agree with the first one - the new iPhone actually sounds about 25% louder than the previous ten.

But in terms of quality, everything is not so obvious. At peak volume the sound is too shrill and sometimes even whistles. We lower the bar to 90% and get cleaner and higher quality sound - very close to the iPhone X. Ironic.

In headphones the situation has not changed at all. The sound is good, pleasant, maybe not top-notch, but 95% of people are completely satisfied. I am among them.

Display

The screen is the key feature of the iPhone XS Max. The smartphone has a huge 6.5-inch Super Retina HD OLED display. The display aspect ratio is 18:9, resolution is 1242x2688 pixels (pixel density per inch is 458 ppi). For comparison, the iPhone X screen resolution is 1125x2436 pixels. Due to the increased resolution, developers will have to adapt their applications and games to Apple's new flagship.

The iPhone XS Max display occupies more than 82% of the front surface of the smartphone. This is a record figure for Apple smartphones. This was achieved by significantly reducing the frames around the perimeter of the display.

The iPhone XS Max screen is very bright and contrasty. The brightness is 625 cd/m², the contrast is typically high for OLED displays - 1,000,000:1. Such indicators make working with a smartphone comfortable in any conditions. Even outdoors on a sunny day, viewing any content or reading text from the iPhone XS Max display will be pleasant.

The display is equipped with support for Apple's proprietary True Tone technology. A six-channel light sensor is responsible for the operation of the technology. It adjusts the image temperature depending on the lighting - changes occur automatically. At first glance they are almost invisible, but testing shows that the difference is really noticeable. In addition, the screen supports HDR10, Dolby Vision and P3 enhanced color format.

The 2022 line continued the design of the iPhone 6/6 Plus and along with these two models a new smartphone appeared, which received a frameless display and a couple of new features for the iPhone. This year the situation has changed. Now, among the main devices, all have lost frames, they do not have a button with a fingerprint scanner, and they all have a not-so-original cutout at the top of the display.

iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max (yes, I agree, not the best name) are flagships with prices of $999-1349 and $1099-1449, respectively. The new Xr model (will go on sale a little later) is slightly inferior to the flagships in terms of capabilities, but also costs less - from $749. In Ukraine, when the turn comes, prices will be noticeably higher.

Among the older devices, the iPhone 7 and 8 (both sizes) remain on sale, but the SE and last year's flagship iPhone X are no longer available. It turns out that the cheapest smartphone in the line was the “seven”, the price tag of which starts at $449. At the same time, for older smartphones there remains a choice of storage options.

Characteristics

The iPhone XS Max is powered by a system based on the Apple A12 Bionic processor. This processor is special in every sense. The chip is created using a revolutionary 7-nanometer FinFET process technology, which has not previously been used in any processor for mobile devices. The same iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X have an A11 Bionic chip, created using a less advanced 10nm process technology.

It is noteworthy that Apple’s competitors will not soon be able to install processors of similar technology in their smartphones. Most chip manufacturers are having serious difficulties creating next-generation processors, which is why their mass release has been delayed until at least mid-2022.

The new A12 Bionic processor uses a more advanced process technology to give iPhone XS Max unparalleled performance. iPhone XS Max can rightfully be called the fastest smartphone in history, along with the 5.8-inch iPhone XS.

A12 Bionic is equipped with six cores. Two cores are responsible for performance, the remaining four for efficiency. When a heavy game or a complex task in one of the applications is running on the iPhone XS Max, the performance cores are turned on at full power. They are also aided by energy-efficient cores, making every task completed faster.

When a user uses the iPhone XS Max for everyday tasks, I work exclusively on the efficiency core. They are powerful in themselves, so it is impossible to notice any delays when performing everyday tasks. This approach allows the iPhone XS Max to work longer without the need to recharge. The reduction in power consumption of the A12 Bionic chip compared to the A11 is 50%.

The A12 Bionic also integrates a new graphics processor developed by Apple. The quad-core video chip uses lossless compression technology, opening up new possibilities for users for games and work. In particular, The Elder Scrolls Blades, shown at the presentation of the iPhone XS Max, will run at maximum graphics exclusively on new Apple smartphones.

The last major feature of the A12 Bionic chip is the Neural Engine, which is capable of executing five trillion commands per second. The Neural Engine is responsible for self-learning of the A12 Bionic processor and further use of the received data in various functions of iOS 12. For example, for instant photo search, which begins even before entering a query.

Thanks to the new chip, iPhone XS Max is up to 50% faster than iPhone X. Performance is improved across the board. iPhone XS Max performs any task faster, from launching applications and games to video processing. Interestingly, the iPhone X did not seem to be “slow” at all, but the iPhone XS Max brought the operating speed to a higher level.

Along with the performance, the A12 Bionic chip also improves energy efficiency. The processor spends significantly less energy on tasks, which directly affects the battery life of the iPhone XS Max. The smartphone has become a record holder among all iPhone models in terms of autonomy.

The RAM capacity of the iPhone XS Max has also been increased compared to the iPhone X. It is 4 GB. The increased amount of RAM will help the iPhone XS to freely keep dozens of applications running, but most importantly, it will ensure the rapid operation of the updated camera. In addition, 4 GB of RAM will enable developers to create applications and games that were previously unavailable on the iPhone due to lack of performance.

iOS 12

The iOS 12 system has many improvements under the hood. Among them is Instant Tuning, an option for controlling notifications. If you frequently receive notifications from the same apps and are tired of them, you can turn them off right from the notifications screen.

If you like Animoji and Memoji, you can have fun with your avatar. The new devices can reflect 50 facial movements using the TrueDepth camera, and you can insert the results into text messages. You can also use these options during FaceTime video chats. Group calls with up to 32 interlocutors will appear later.

Other innovations in iOS 12 include Screen Time with tabs with application usage statistics. Searching by photos has become smarter; you can set a schedule for the Do Not Disturb option.

The virtual assistant Siri now has quick actions that allow you to perform various tasks, including from third-party applications. This will be done with just one phrase out loud. For example, saying “I'm on my way home” could turn up the thermostat at home, send a text message to your wife, and trigger directions in Google Maps.

Battery and charging

iPhone XS Max has the most capacious battery in the history of Apple smartphones. The capacity of the lithium-ion battery of the iPhone XS is 3174 mAh. Not many people know that the record was held for many years by the iPhone 6 Plus - 2915 mAh. No other Plus model, nor the iPhone X, could beat it. And the 6.5-inch iPhone XS Max did it.

The iPhone XS Max battery is made in the style of the iPhone X. It consists of two interconnected cells and is shaped like the letter L. Thanks to this solution, Apple not only increased the battery capacity, but also updated the location of components inside the smartphone body.

The battery life of the iPhone XS Max is also record-breaking. It can work without the need to recharge for an hour and a half longer than the iPhone X. The largest smartphone in Apple history will last as long as 25 hours in talk mode.

At the same time, the iPhone XS Max charges very quickly. The model supports fast charging, allowing you to replenish 50% of the battery charge in just 30 minutes. Considering that the battery capacity has increased, maintaining this feature can also be called a plus of the smartphone. Wireless charging on the iPhone XS Max is noticeably faster than on the iPhone X, despite the larger battery.

Battery

The battery capacity of the new model was revolutionary for the company - 3179 mAh. As expected, the phone was supposed to provide better battery life, and this actually happened. With everyday use, the device can last from one and a half to two days, and for Apple technology this is a lot. In games, the device survives for about 4.5 hours, YouTube videos can play for about 10 hours.

Important! The unpleasant thing is that under heavy loads the phone can get very hot. This is felt at the top of the device, and the maximum temperature inside the case can reach 45 degrees. At least, such figures were recorded by specially conducted tests. The XS is no different from its older brother in this regard and heats up similarly.

For fast charging, you will need to buy a powerful unit and cable separately. With them, 50% of the battery is collected in 30 minutes.

Face ID

iPhone XS Max supports Face ID, which is powered by the TrueDepth camera system, the Secure Enclave security model, and the Neural Engine machine learning system. Due to the latter, Face ID constantly learns to detect changes in a person’s appearance, which allows Face ID to always correctly identify the owner of the iPhone.

Face ID in the iPhone XS Max has been significantly improved compared to the iPhone X. The dot projector in the TrueDepth camera system, as before, creates a face map of 30,000 dots, but there are no changes here. However, the Secure Enclave module in the latest A12 Bionic processor has received significant changes. It matches the user's face with the saved card much faster. Because of this, the process of facial recognition and verification is significantly faster. The speed of Face ID was directly affected by the A12 Bionic processor itself, which has become significantly more productive.

Still, one revolution occurred in the transition from X to Xs, albeit a velvet one. We are, of course, talking about dual-SIM functionality: the version of the smartphone designed for China is equipped with two full slots for nano-SIM. For the rest of the world (as well as Russia) – one slot + the ability to add an e-SIM. Both sides got a reason to spray poison: both the defenders of the eternal single-SIM iPhone (well, now you have no arguments against Apple smartphones!), and the critics of this policy (ha, but you said that a second SIM card is not needed!). However, the solution is intermediate: when traveling abroad, iPhone owners are still forced to either use roaming, change the SIM card, or take a second smartphone “for the Internet” - the ability to install an e-SIM in this case is perceived almost as decorative. Those who want to finally decide this issue for themselves can only go to Hong Kong or China and buy an iPhone there.

The iPhone Xs Max supports fourth-generation networks at a level appropriate for a 2022 flagship smartphone: the maximum download speed reaches gigabit (LTE Cat. 16). All the necessary bands for correct operation of LTE are available in Russia. Bluetooth 5.0, GPS/GLONASS and a Wi-Fi module that supports 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac standards are also available. The NFC module, as usual, is only used for contactless payment for purchases using Apple Pay. The navigation module works with GPS (A-GPS), GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS, and does this in a fairly ordinary way; the Xs Max cannot connect to satellites on two frequencies at once.

Unfortunately, there are certain complaints about the quality of communication with the iPhone Xs Max. First of all, they concern the stability of work with Wi-Fi networks. This is where iPhones traditionally do not shine, and the Xs Max does not change the situation - it can lose connection even with trusted networks, which, as a rule, do not have problems. I won’t say that the situation is catastrophic, but you expect more stable operation in these situations from a flagship device. The same, but to a lesser extent, applies to mobile networks: several times during testing, the iPhone stopped accessing the Internet via an LTE connection without explanation - only a forced reboot helped.

Cameras

The rear camera of the iPhone XS Max is practically no different in appearance from that used in the iPhone X. But in this case, you shouldn’t judge by clothes - all the changes are inside. The dual vertically oriented camera of the iPhone XS Max with a six-lens lens has a resolution of 12+12 megapixels. The aperture of the wide-angle lens is f/1.8 and the telephoto lens is f/2.4. The camera supports 2x optical zoom and 10x digital zoom. Both modules support optical image stabilization.

Portrait mode, which lets you take photos with depth of field, has been greatly improved in the iPhone XS Max. First of all, background blur is much more accurate. Apple managed to achieve this thanks to the new camera sensor and support for the A12 Bionic processor.

Equally important, portrait shooting mode now supports the new “Depth” function. It allows you to adjust the background blur in any portrait photo after taking it.

But perhaps the key feature of the iPhone XS Max camera is the new Smart HDR mode. When shooting in this mode, the smartphone camera uses accelerated sensors and the full power of the new signal processor. This allows for maximum detail to be revealed in the darkest and lightest areas of the photo.

Notable changes have also occurred for video recording. In addition to improved shooting quality, iPhone XS Max cameras can shoot video while recording stereo sound. Since the smartphone itself has stereo speakers, you can fully view and listen to such videos directly on your iPhone.

If you have an iPhone X in your hands and there is no desire for a larger display, then relax. Ten is good even now - at the turn of 2018-2019.

If you have an iPhone X, but want a bigger screen, take the Xs Max. There are no options here. New experiences are guaranteed.

To owners of all other iPhones, consider making the switch. A huge, frameless OLED screen is incredibly cool. And convenient. If you have or 8 Plus, then you will probably have the means to take the Xs right away. If you have an older device, then look for a not at all outdated iPhone X on sale. Now is the time to upgrade - while there are still a dozen on the shelves.
