Is additional screen protection really necessary? Is it necessary to put a protective glass on your smartphone? Does it actually protect your screen in any way, or is it just another way to take money out of your pocket? Let's figure it out together.
Smartphones have become a very integral part of our lives. Without them, many things are now unthinkable. And almost every smartphone user is concerned about its safety, so that the device lasts as long as possible.
The most important and at the same time the most expensive part of any smartphone is its screen. That is why almost every user glues protective glass or film to their smartphone.
What does glued protective glass give?
By gluing glass to your smartphone, you only slightly increase the resistance of the smartphone screen to impacts. There is also protection against scratches. After all, when falling, a large impact force falls on the protective glass. However, most Chinese safety glasses are not able to withstand impacts and will easily break at the slightest impact. By the way, it is precisely because of this that protective glass is considered a consumable material.
Smartphone case or bumper?
There are several types of protective cases and bumpers for smartphones. The main difference between a case and a bumper is the presence of a front cover that covers the screen; the case can also be just a case, in the form of a bag, the size of a smartphone, or a book case. A case with a lid (case, book case) in principle allows you to avoid covering the screen with film.
Basically, phone cases are made of leather, its substitute, polyurethane, and plastic. The cover has rigidity lamellas in its design, allowing it to maintain its shape.
Who benefits from this?
Considering what has been said above, namely that glass is, first of all, a consumable material , some conclusions naturally arise.
First and most important: smartphone screen protectors are quite fragile . There are, of course, glasses made using Gorilla Glass technology, but the price of one such glass exceeds all reasonable limits. And there is no guarantee that such glass glued on top of the screen will have a high degree of strength. After all, it is not reinforced in any way, but simply glued on top.
Second: the markup on glass in stores is simply huge. Most of the glass sold in stores is cheap Chinese glass . The exact same ones are sold on AliExpress. The purchase price of such glass is about 50 - 150 rubles. In stores, prices for the same glasses already cost 500 rubles more.
Thus, protective glasses are quite expensive consumables that you will need to change periodically. It is profitable for the store that you buy protective glass from them, because the markup on it is simply colossal. That is why in any store the seller will kindly tell you why you need to have protective glass.
Attachment Features
Installing it is relatively simple. The kit may contain installation accessories - cleaning wipes, polishes, etc. If the package does not contain accessories, you need to prepare them and you can start:
- the display must be thoroughly cleaned of any dirt and polishing;
- You can use compressed air to blow out all dust particles;
- it needs to be held by the edge, it has a protective film on top that needs to be removed;
- carefully glue, making sure that there is no movement along the recesses on the buttons.
The cheapest tempered glass may not come with mounting accessories. The kit sometimes includes a special cloth soaked in alcohol for cleaning, and a dry cloth, which is used for polishing.
On a note!
In most cases, once applied, it will serve the user as long as the gadget itself, but there are situations when this protective layer requires removal. To do this, carefully lift it along the edge and tilt it up. After a couple of seconds, when air begins to get under the surface, it will peel off. After removal, wipe the screen with a polishing cloth.
Film
Its big advantage is its low price. For 150-200 rubles you can buy it on Aliexpress, designed for specific models, it has the appropriate size and cutouts, although films of a higher price are of better quality. The advantage is its minimal thickness. If you glue it correctly, it will be almost unnoticeable. However, applying it is troublesome; it sometimes creates an air bubble that cannot be removed. In most cases, you have to remove it from the screen.
Strained glass
This is a completely different quality product, it is noticeably thicker and stiffer. It is easier to stick, and its durability is higher. The disadvantage is the higher price. New models usually have Gorilla Glass screens, which theoretically do not need additional protection. This option is a better choice because it lasts longer for the user as it is more scratch resistant.
So is it necessary to glue a protective glass on your smartphone or not?
No matter how paradoxical it may sound, it is almost pointless to install protective glass on an expensive smartphone . This is due to the fact that expensive smartphones use the best glass. Plus, the geometry of the phone is designed to enhance the strength of the original glass of the screen.
The glued glass is not reinforced by the frame of the smartphone, unlike the original glass. This is what makes glued glass vulnerable to impacts.
It should be noted that manufacturers spend a lot of money on research and development of strengthening smartphone screens. This is especially true for flagship models. Manufacturers do everything to ensure that the screen does not scratch or break in most situations. Against this background, gluing flimsy glass onto an expensive smartphone looks a little stupid.
The standard screens of modern smartphones have already reached the point where gluing glass is no longer practical. Soon, glued glass on a smartphone will look as “cool” as a plastic bag on the TV remote control. There seems to be a meaning, but no one can really explain what it is
