It’s no longer a secret to anyone what a smart watch is, or, as they are also called, Smart Watch. The market is replete with models that can offer suitable design and necessary functions. But often, having bought a wearable device, the user is faced with the question of how to charge a smart watch correctly and how long to charge it?
To answer these questions, you first need to understand what types of chargers exist for a wearable gadget.
Types of chargers
When purchasing a smartwatch, the kit includes a charger or cable for recharging from a PC or laptop.
How to properly charge a smart watch is indicated in the instructions for use included in the package. But below we will consider this important point in detail. In the meantime, let's learn about the methods of the process itself.
How to charge
Not all wearable devices have the same design, so you need to know how to charge your smartwatch:
- Using wireless charging. A docking station is used on which the watch is placed (as a rule, it is included in the kit, but it is also available in special stores).
- Using a USB cable. A wire is used to connect to a power source with different types of connection: microUSB, magnet, clothespin (clamp).
Gadgets contain lithium-ion batteries with different capacities, so the time it takes to fill the battery with energy varies. Manufacturers offer various charging technologies, depending on the model:
- Magnetic induction technology
- Long-distance inductive energy transfer technology (Qi)
As an additional method, Samsung offers its users the possibility of wireless charging from its proprietary smartphone (Samsung Galaxy S10). Those. All you have to do is place the watch on the back of your phone in a specific way and enable the power transfer function to your compatible device.
It is very important that the output voltage matches the battery of the wearable gadget for its safety. Therefore, to find out whether a smart watch can be charged by charging from a phone, you must make sure that the current supplied from the smartphone’s power supply matches the required one (the permissible value is marked on the adapter). If it is higher than permissible, there is a risk of damaging the watch battery.
Most smartwatches have a battery capacity ranging from 370-420 mAh. The power supply voltage is usually between 3.7V and 4.2V. In fact, you can use a 5V-1A charger which will ensure excellent battery performance. However, carefully check the parameters in the instructions for the device!
Once you know which type is supported by your device, you can start the process.
How to charge your Samsung Galaxy Watch from your phone
Before charging your Galaxy Watch from a smartphone, you should carefully read the instructions for your phone. On different models, the reversible PowerShare units are located in different places, so in order not to search for the correct area, it is better to immediately refer to the accompanying documents from the manufacturer.
After specifying the location of the charging unit, we begin work:
- Open the curtain and look for the Wireless PowerShare icon in the notification panel. Click on it to make it active.
- Then we turn the smartphone over with the screen down, and install the smart watch on top of the PowerShare unit (in most models it is located in the center of the case).
- We wait for the devices to find each other - the smartphone should vibrate slightly, signaling a successful connection. Lift the screen while holding the Galaxy Watch in place and tap “OK” below the information window.
After the watch is sufficiently powered, turn off the PowerShare function on the Galaxy. The method is also suitable for recharging other equipment: it is very convenient to fill the batteries of several phones overnight from one charging block. The screens of compatible models will show by what percentage the battery has been replenished, so you can always assess the situation and turn them off when optimal performance is achieved.
The function will be useful not only for those who objectively do not have enough sockets to power all their existing smart equipment. PowerShare is useful for people who regularly go on business trips, as well as travelers. To fill the batteries of mobile accessories, it is enough to have a charger for the Galaxy, and then “distribute” energy from it to the others.
How to properly charge a smart watch
1If the Smart Watch is powered via a microUSB cable:
- Connect the cable to the clock using the appropriate plug. If magnetic contacts are used, connect them so that they are firmly attached to the contacts of the watch. Often, for convenience, a case or latch is included to secure the case while charging.
- Connect the other end of the wire to a USB socket on your desktop or laptop.
PCs and laptops are great for power supply as they ensure a stable and correct voltage.
The manufacturer may additionally offer an adapter in the kit that delivers the maximum possible power per hour without harming the battery.
2Using the adapter, you can charge your smart watch from a power outlet:
- Connect the USB cable to the power adapter.
- Connect the other end of the USB cable to the corresponding connector on your wearable device.
- Plug the adapter into a power outlet.
3If your smartwatch charges wirelessly:
- Connect the USB cable at one end to the docking station (if necessary), and the other end to the power adapter (if necessary).
- Plug the adapter into a power outlet.
- Place the watch on the docking station so that the back of the watch is in contact with the contact plate on the charging platform.
Some smartwatch repair specialists claim that the wearable device can be charged from any power source with any current supply. They explain this by saying that the watch has a special controller that controls the current and voltage to the required values. At the right time, this controller stops supplying energy when the extreme level is reached.
It all depends on conscientious manufacturers, who must equip the device with a microcircuit of the required quality.
How to charge children's smart watches
Some tips on how to charge a smart watch for children:
- Please read the instructions for use before connecting to the power source.
- Almost all children's models are recommended to be charged with a current of no more than 1A.
- For the first time, bring the process to 100% (then you can simply recharge the device).
- Try not to let the device become completely discharged.
- Do not connect children's smartwatches to a smartphone charger (this may lead to premature battery wear due to excessive power supply).
- Charge Baby Watch using the original cable in a gentle mode, i.e. from a low-power power source (PC or laptop). If a power plug is used, see the information indicated on it: there should be no more than 1A.
- The energy replenishment time, depending on the model, ranges from 1.5 hours to 2 hours.
- Do not try to immediately turn on a switched off watch due to a low battery. This may damage the battery. First, connect them to a power source and wait until the battery collects some energy, then turn them on.
- Disconnect the gadget from the power supply after it is fully charged.
You can charge children's smart watches for children using the same instructions as for adult models. Most baby wearables come with a USB cable that connects to the Smart Baby Watch either using magnetic contacts or a microUSB plug. Each specific model requires individual time to fully charge the battery.
Is it possible to charge the bracelet without charging and wires?
Usually the device is charged using the original USB cable, but different situations happen in life and this is not always feasible. For example, the original cable may be lost, faulty, or simply not available at the moment. It is possible to charge the fitness bracelet without charging without charging. When using this method, the user does not require any special skills; the procedure is simple to carry out. To do this, perform the following steps:
- We take any USB cable.
- We expose the red and black wires.
- We press them to the contacts of the tracker, fixing them well.
- We connect the other end of the USB cable to a free port on a computer or laptop.
- The charging process of the device will begin, which can be seen on the display.
It is worth noting that it is still not advisable to regularly practice this method of charging the device, but if there is a temporary absence of a specially designed cord, this option will work quite well.
How long to charge the watch for the first time
It is important to know how much to charge your smartwatch for the first time, as well as for further use.
After purchasing a Smart Watch, the first charge must be carried out within 2 hours (it is important to read the instruction manual, where the exact time will be indicated).
It is not necessary to bring the first three procedures to 100% and then discharge the battery three times to 0%. This is due to the fact that modern devices use lithium-ion batteries, which do not have the effect of such memory, and such manipulations do not have any effect.
Carefully read the recommendations given by the manufacturer in the operating document for your model. Some companies warn that the watch needs three full discharges to drain the battery.
How long does charging take?
There is no clear answer to how long it takes to charge a smart watch. But, if you check the specifications of your gadget and find information in the instructions, you will probably know this, taking into account the model and battery capacity.
If the battery capacity is low, fully charging it may take from 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on the characteristics of the battery. It is advisable not to keep it for more than 3 hours.
Then you can maintain the battery level without completely discharging or charging (fortunately, most models warn the user about low energy levels so that they can be recharged in a timely manner).
It is worth considering that charging time is affected by:
- Battery capacity
- Battery discharge level
- Charger power
The charger must be disconnected after the process is completed. Do not keep the device supplied with more current than specified in the instructions, otherwise the battery may reduce its guaranteed operating time.
How to check your battery level
The first thing you need to do is determine the battery level. Turn on your smartwatch (usually by pressing the power button for a few seconds), and once it boots up, the watch's charge indicator will appear on the screen. A low value indicates that it needs to be charged. In most cases, however, a new watch has about 2/3 of its lifespan and does not need to be recharged immediately.
Check the battery level of your smart watch
You can also enable the watch's power saving mode (if available).
How to charge a smartwatch without charging
Sometimes the question arises: how to charge a smart watch without charging, because it is not always at hand when you need to replenish the battery.
1If your watch uses a microUSB cable:
- Use any suitable USB cable and connect it to the watch.
- Plug the other end of the cable into the socket on your PC or laptop.
- You can additionally use a power plug from a smartphone with the appropriate power. Then you can charge the smartwatch from a power outlet.
Please be aware that other people's hardware may damage your device. These recommendations are for informational purposes only and are based on the experiences of other users. To avoid damage, use original equipment.
2If a smartwatch uses a magnetic type, then without its own charger it will not be possible to replenish the battery with energy.
3When the gadget is only compatible with a docking station, there is no way to charge the smartwatch without charging (unless, of course, there is a similar one).
The watch is not charging
What to do if your smart watch is not charging?
