New Huawei 2022: battery capacity, autonomy. What is the manufacturer silent about?

For about two years now, Huawei smartphones have been in a completely atypical position for smartphones running Android. On the one hand, the brand’s devices have the most advanced characteristics and in some ways even surpass competitors’ devices. But, on the other hand, US sanctions have seriously reduced the attractiveness of Huawei branded devices in the eyes of many users. In the end, when buying such a smartphone, you need to prepare for a number of restrictions that are not typical for products from other manufacturers. But is it worth buying Huawei devices at all? Let's figure it out.

Huawei smartphones are not the best choice for 2022

The leak showed what a very unusual Huawei P50 camera will look like

Let's start with the arrangement of the figures. Huawei is a comprehensive brand that also includes the sub-brand Honor. Despite the fact that late last year Huawei sold Honor to the Chinese conglomerate Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology Co. Ltd., in order to remove it from American sanctions, the former sub-brand has not yet released a single smartphone developed under the wing of the new owners. Therefore, I propose to equate Honor devices that are on the market as of March 2022 with Huawei.

What's new from Huawei?

The company is re-entering the mobile industry [statement by Chairman Guo Ping in August]. In 2021, the attention of brand fans is focused on new products.

From smartphones to tablets, smartwatches to wireless headphones, we've compiled a list with features and a focus on battery life.

How to calculate battery life:

  • • you see the capacity in mAh (mAh);
  • • by capacity you can find out how many hours the battery will last (calculation);
  • • smartphones were loaded with a current of 30 mA in standby mode, 200 mA on average and a maximum of 900 mA in games;
  • • for tablets, we relied on a review of Xiaomi Pad 5 with an 8720 mAh , where the average load current was 600 mA (video, web surfing);
  • • other products relied on tests (links provided).

"Liquid" cameras of Huawei 2022 flagships

“Liquid” lenses for Huawei smartphones could see the light of day as early as 2021. At the end of 2022, insiders reported that final testing of the new technology was nearing completion. There is no announcement or detailed information about the release of the flagships, but information about “liquid lenses” is already available. No other gadget manufacturer has announced such a new product for 2022.

The company patented this technology in early 2022. A “liquid” lens is a system that allows a camera to focus objects at a speed equal to the focusing speed of human eyes. Stabilization also improves: current is supplied to the liquid where the lens is located. Depending on the current voltage, the liquid can change its shape, which improves stabilization and focus. Such a system is little subject to mechanical stress - users eagerly await new products.

Huawei Nova 9 Pro smartphone

Characteristics of Nova 9 Pro.

In Nova 9 Pro, the battery capacity is 3900 mAh [source] nominal or 4000 mAh projected.

It is not officially reported how long it holds a charge. If you use the above calculation, you should expect:

  • 4 hours of games,
  • 19.5 hours with active use,
  • up to 5 days in standby mode.

⇡#Display and sound

Huawei nova 8 has a 6.57-inch diagonal OLED display with a resolution of 2340 × 1080 pixels (format – 19.5:9; it’s even unusual, everyone is making smartphones even narrower and elongated). Pixel density is normal, 392 ppi. There won't be any crazy sharpness, but the detailing is more than acceptable.

The screen supports a refresh rate of 90 Hz - without this, a modern smartphone of a more or less high level simply does not enter the market now.

The measured maximum brightness level is 526 cd/m2 - a very good indicator for an organic LED screen; it is pleasant to use the smartphone in any lighting, including on a sunny day.

In the screen settings, you can turn on eye protection (mode with the warmest colors) and adjust the resolution (HD or Full HD) or font size, and change the color rendering - choose between two profiles (“normal” and “bright”) or set the desired one you color temperature. I measured color rendering in two preset profiles, without individual temperature adjustment.

Huawei nova 8, color temperature in vivid color mode. Blue line – nova 8 indicators, dotted line – reference temperature

Huawei nova 8, color gamut in vivid color mode. Gray triangle – DCI-P3 coverage, white triangle – nova 8 coverage

By default, the Huawei nova 5T screen operates in “bright” mode. The color range in this mode is expanded and close in area to the DCI-P3 standard, but with a shift. The average gamma level is within normal limits (2.22), and with smooth curves (pardon the pun). The color temperature graph is also very smooth and increased slightly - it remains at the level of 7,000 K. The average deviation for the expanded Color Checker palette (shades of gray + a wide range of color shades) is 4.77, with the upper limit of the norm being 3.00. The colors are moderately cool, bright, but not too fair, although the deviation cannot be called critical; after all, we are talking about a smartphone, and not a professional monitor.

Huawei nova 8, color temperature in normal color mode. Blue line – nova 8 indicators, dotted line – reference temperature

Huawei nova 8, color gamut in normal color mode. Gray triangle – sRGB coverage, white triangle – nova 8 coverage

In normal color mode, the color space is narrowed to sRGB, with exactly the same offset relative to the norm as with the bright preset. Gamma is essentially the same - 2.19. The color temperature curve is ideal - it follows the reference value of 6,500 K. But the average DeltaE deviation in the Color Checker palette is worse than in the bright mode - 5.66. It's better not to leave the default color mode - it's better in every way.

Huawei nova 8 lacks an analog audio jack - after all, Huawei Freebuds will not buy themselves, the presence of important TWS headphones in the assortment literally provokes a jack. Via Bluetooth, the main profiles of high-quality data transfer are not supported - neither LDAC, nor aptX; The headphones are connected either using the AAC or SBS profile, which, among other things, affects the power - in the subway you have to turn the volume up to maximum even with noise-canceling headphones. The external speaker is monophonic, located on the lower edge - it is quite loud, but with average sound quality.

Smartphone Huawei Nova 9

Nova 9 specifications.

Interestingly, the Nova 9 a slightly more capacious battery than the “ Pro ” - 4200 mAh [source] nominal (4300 mAh maximum).

Nowhere on Huawei's does it promise how long it will hold a charge. Autonomy is estimated to be slightly better:

  • 4.5 hours in games;
  • 21 hours in active mode;
  • just under 6 days standby time.

⇡#Camera

Huawei nova 8 offers four cameras, of which only three are directly responsible for obtaining images: two modules work with two focal lengths (standard, approximately 26 equivalent millimeters and extended, approximately 17 mm), another one allows you to do macro, and the fourth - This is a depth sensor, it is conditionally needed only for software blurring of the background.

The main camera has a 64-megapixel Quad Bayer system module, which works with an ƒ/1.9 aperture lens. Phase autofocus, no optical stabilizer. The second camera has an 8-megapixel sensor and an ƒ/2.4 lens, without stabilizer or autofocus. As I noted above, it allows you to get a picture with a wider viewing angle, but this is not an extreme increase - the expansion is approximately one and a half times. But one can note relatively small spatial distortions in spectacular general plans.

Examples of shooting from different viewing angles: from a wide-angle camera to 2x software zoom

Despite the absence of a telephoto module, there is a 2x zoom option - of course, “hybrid”: the smartphone takes a photo using all the subpixels of the Quad Bayer matrix and then crops the image to standard resolution (16 megapixels). The inevitable losses in detail are adjusted in software by increasing contour sharpening: the image does not look very natural, but retains its “integrity” and does not crumble into mush. The dynamic range suffers much more: the Huawei nova 8, of course, uses machine learning technologies to refine the image, HDR is always on, but this is not enough - the shadows fall out, the highlights are too bright. However, zoom can also be used in non-ideal lighting conditions, unless we are talking about late night with minimal lighting. The wide-angle camera allows you to achieve a natural picture with a more decent dynamic range, but, firstly, it is not applicable outside of landscape scenes due to the lack of autofocus, and secondly, it does not perform well at night. The main camera, with high-aperture optics and a larger sensor, allows you to choose scenes and lighting relatively freely. The picture is rich (you can turn off AI to make it a little more natural), with well-developed shadows and highlights. But again, about the image through the efforts of neural networks.

On the left is a photo with a resolution of 16 megapixels, on the right - with a resolution of 64 megapixels

The features of the Quad Bayer sensor of the main camera are used not only for zoom, but also for shooting in the highest available resolution - when you activate the Hi-Res mode, you can get frames of 64 megapixels. Examples are above.

On the left is a picture in normal mode, on the right is in night mode

There is a night mode, mandatory for modern cameras, with stitching together frames taken with different exposures for several seconds, and subsequent refinement of the result with the participation of a neuroprocessor. Oddly enough, I will not necessarily recommend this mode for use - as on the Huawei P40/Mate 40, images taken in the standard mode look both good and more natural. But if you need the most saturated (perhaps even oversaturated) picture, you can use it. Plus, this is the only way to get any results in pitch darkness.

Examples of shooting with a macro camera

The third camera is responsible exclusively for macro photography. This is a two-megapixel module with an aperture of ƒ/2.4, allowing you to shoot from a distance of 4 cm from the subject. But no further - the focus is fixed exactly at this distance, it is impossible to change. Finding the right distance is not so easy; macro photography on the Huawei nova 8 requires a fair amount of patience. The resolution of pictures taken with the macro module is 1600 × 1200 pixels.

The fourth camera is another two-megapixel module. This is not a TOF camera, no dot projector. It helps in portrait mode. It’s difficult to say what its influence on the result is, but the Huawei nova 8 blurs the background very well - I’ll note two available focal lengths and very interesting blur effects.

Huawei nova 8, camera app interface

The camera application has not changed compared to what we saw in EMUI 11 (and in EMUI 10, for that matter): quite sane navigation, a decent set of functions, but a very inconvenient zoom mechanism, unless you switch between the three available focal lengths, and change in gradations. There is a “professional” mode with manual settings, the ability to shoot simultaneously with the rear and front cameras (“dual view”), but, for example, there is no way to force HDR to be activated.

Huawei Nova 8

View all images (51)

Huawei nova 8 can shoot 4K video at a frequency of up to 30 frames per second, but with Full HD the situation is unclear - you cannot activate exactly 60 frames per second, you can choose between the frequency of “auto” and 30 frames per second, and on automatic the frequency is up to 60 I didn’t get frames (on the contrary, it dropped to 25 frames per second). Very peculiar. Digital stabilization is available even when shooting at maximum resolution, but you can switch between focal lengths (using the same very inconvenient slider) only when shooting in Full HD or lower resolution. You can zoom the image directly during shooting. There are filters and a beautifier (if there is a person in the frame), but there are no other additional functions typical for Huawei smartphones, such as background blur.

The front camera has a 32-megapixel sensor with an ƒ/2.0 aperture lens, without autofocus and flash. Moreover, this is not a Quad Bayer sensor, but simply a matrix with a resolution of 32 megapixels, allowing you to obtain images in a resolution of 6528 × 4896 pixels. The shooting quality is very good in normal lighting and just good in dim artificial light. Fixed focus is set correctly, spatial distortion from wide-angle optics is at an acceptable level.

Huawei P50 Pro smartphone

Specifications of P50 Pro.

The manufacturer is trying to make the most of the internal space of the smartphone. In the P50 Pro he managed to install a 4260 mAh [source] in the nominal value (4360 mAh declared).

There are no official promises about how long the device will last on a single charge. According to calculations:

  • • just under 5 hours of games,
  • 21 hours of active use,
  • 6 days screen off and not used (pending).

Nova Lite 3/16GB

The diagonal of the color IPS screen is 5.2". Has 1 main camera 12 MP. Front camera - 8 MP. Audio formats are the same as in other models. Headphone jack - mini jack 3.5 mm. Does not support contactless payment.

Smartphone HUAWEI Nova Lite 3/16GB in the review of Huawei smartphones

Interfaces: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB. Supports 3G, 4G LTE Geopositioning GPS, GLONASS, A-GPS. Processor 4x2.1 + 4x1.7 GHz. Built-in memory 16 GB, RAM - 3 GB. Battery capacity - 3000 mAh. Charging connector - micro-USB. Equipped with sensors: fingerprint scanner, proximity, light, compass. The kit includes headphones, but does not include protective cases or films.

Main advantages:

  • supports Android 7;
  • instant fingerprint recognition;
  • comfortable;
  • thin;
  • Full HD screen;
  • good menu design;
  • quick shooting from sleep mode;
  • inexpensive;
  • high-quality microphone;
  • bright screen;
  • fast 8-core processor.

The main disadvantages of the model:

  • no oleophobic screen coating;
  • plastic sidewalls made to look like metal;
  • does not pick up FM well;
  • The slot is combined for SIM cards and microSD.

Huawei P50 smartphone

Characteristics of P50.

The autonomy of the P50 is unlikely to really differ from the Pro version, even despite the fact that the battery is reduced to 4000 mAh [source] nominal (4100 mAh promised). The screen has been made smaller, and the slightly simplified equipment consumes less power.

Again, there are no official statements on opening hours. But we calculated:

  • • a little more than 4 hours of gaming,
  • 20 hours of regular screen activations,
  • 5.5 days on hold.

⇡#Autonomous work

Huawei nova 8 received a battery with a capacity of 14.44 Wh (3800 mAh, 3.8 V). Not very serious, it would seem: today less than 4000 milliamp-hours seems not comme il faut at all, but nova 8 is enough. The smartphone reliably holds a charge throughout the day; I didn’t feel the need to frantically look for an outlet before coming home if I charged the smartphone overnight.

But in our traditional test with Full HD video playback at maximum brightness, with Wi-Fi and notifications turned on, the smartphone did not perform very impressively, even despite the OLED screen - normal for a device with an LCD display.

For charging, the current USB Type-C port (USB 2.0 standard) is used with the proprietary Huawei Super Charge fast charging system with a power of 66 W, which allows you to fully charge the battery in 35 minutes. Very cool. But wireless charging is not supported - but there is reverse wired charging (with a power of 5 W).

Smartphone Huawei nova Y60

Characteristics of nova Y60.

The manufacturer promises that nova Y60 works longer than other devices thanks to the State-of-the-art artificial intelligence system [research]. How exactly this helps the battery with an already large nominal capacity of 4900 mAh [source] is unclear (5000 mAh in the advertisement).

The manufacturer avoids exact figures on operating time for this model - not a single mention on the official website. We calculated:

  • • about 6 hours of games,
  • 24 hours with dynamic use,
  • • almost 7 days if not used (smartphone on, no screen).

Y5p

Compared to previous models, it has a smaller 5.45" IPS color screen. The main camera is 1 with a resolution of 8 MP. Front camera 5 MP. The same multimedia capabilities are supported as previous models. Built-in memory is 32 GB, RAM is 2 GB, but the price of the smartphone is very affordable.

HUAWEI Y5p smartphone in the review of Huawei smartphones

Battery capacity 3020 mAh. Supports 3G, 4G LTE, has a slot for microSD. Supports Android 10. Can use 2 SIM cards. Weight - 144 g. Equipped with proximity and light sensors. The package does not include protective films. Warranty and service life - 1 year.

Positive points:

  • inexpensive;
  • compact;
  • fast work;
  • comfortable;
  • holds a charge for a long time;
  • loud speaker.

Negative sides:

  • no Google services;
  • small letters on the keyboard;
  • The screen is not bright enough in the sun;
  • no message indicator;
  • No headphones included.

Huawei MatePad 11 tablet

MatePad 11 specifications.

The non-removable battery of the MatePad 11 is specified with a capacity of 7150 mAh [source]. The advertising figure is 7250 mAh.

The site states 12 hours of video playback (1080p with 200 nits brightness). The average load output is 595 mA.

Just fits into our average reference calculation (we have 600 mA). At a maximum load of 900-1200 mA, 6-8 hours of operation will be obtained.

Total all calculations:

  • 12 hours of video;
  • 6-8 hours of games, intense exercise.

Huawei - how to talk about a phone manufacturer

The history of Huawei began in 1987. The founder of the company is retired PLA (People's Liberation Army) officer Zhen Zhengfei. It developed rapidly, turnover and profits grew very quickly. The country tried to help the company with all its might.

The year 2003 in the history of the company was marked by the creation of a special division, Huawei Device, designed to develop mobile phones. A year later, the world saw the new brainchild of the Chinese company - a phone in WDCMA format. In 2005, buyers appreciated the clamshell model U626, which supported the 3G format - the highest level for that time. It is no coincidence that it received the prestigious international Charlton Media Group award for the best phone in this format.

4 years passed, in 2009 Huawei released the first smartphone based on Android. The model received a modification of the Huawei 8230, had a 3.2 megapixel camera, a 3.5 inch display, and the OS could be updated from version 1.5 to 2.1.

Since the end of 2012, Huawei began producing phones on the Windows Phone 8 platform.

Smartphones under the Honor brand began to be produced in 2014. The first of them was Honor 6. It is equipped with two cameras of 5 and 13 megapixels, a 5ʺ IPS FullHD display, a 4-core Cortex-A15 processor, and 3 gigs of RAM. Since then, the Honor lineup has expanded significantly. Basically, the line of phones is designed for an advanced, youth audience.

The company does not stand still and is developing at a gigantic pace. New solutions in the field of smartphone technology are being proposed all the time. Now, when compared with all competitors, Huawei is one of the best manufacturers in this field.

Huawei MatePad Pro tablet

MatePad Pro specifications.

The tablet is powered by a 7150 mAh [source]. The advertisement talks about a 7250 mAh battery.

The company promises (footnote 30) that one charge will last for 12 hours with the MatePad Pro (1080p offline video). If we estimate, as in the previous case, the average load, we will get exactly the same current value.

Taking into account almost identical screens, chipsets and equipment, the autonomy figures will be the same:

  • 12 hours of video;
  • 6-8 hours of games, intense exercise.

New firmware for 42 models

According to leaks in mid-2022, 42 models of Huawei devices were supposed to receive the EMUI 11 shell update and transition to it. Now insiders claim that only 14 smartphones will receive the updated platform. Among them:

Device modelYear of issue
P40 line2020
Mate Xs2020
P30 line2019
Mate 20 X 5G2019
Mate 20 line2018
Nova 5T2019
P30 Pro New Edition2020

Most of the models that will receive updates are new devices. It came as a surprise to many that such smartphones as popular among users as the P40 Lite, Mate 30 and the light version will not receive EMUI 11. We can only hope that the list is not complete and will continue to be replenished with devices released in 2022 or 2022 or later. Those models included in the list will begin to be updated in Russia in December.

Every year Huawei introduces something new and picks up current trends. The foldable Mate Xs only proves that the company is not afraid of experiments and is ready to compete with market giants. There is no doubt that the new Huawei 2022 smartphones will take the company to a new level and it will be able to gain even greater trust from users.

Read about other technology expected in the coming year:

  • the latest laptops;
  • TVs 2021;
  • new Xiaomi smartphones.

Huawei P Smart 2022 will be in great demand among consumers as it has all the modern innovations. I consider the technology and pricing policy of this company acceptable. With the same technical characteristics, this model will clearly cost less and attract buyers. I think that such development of digital devices will take the company to a higher level among consumers.

It seems to me that Huawei is now the market leader. All my friends who bought a smartphone were the first to consider Huawei and most bought their product. Such a novelty as a flexible screen is expected; now all manufacturers are preparing their presentations of this development. I’m more interested in a new one like “Liquid” cameras. It will be necessary to test and compare with existing “pixels”.

In my opinion, Huawei is preparing to finally turn the apple into a core. Already now, most are interested in the new functions of the Chinese manufacturer, and Apple is trying with all its might to keep up with it and often simply stupidly copies, extolling it as its own achievements.

And yet Huawei is in big trouble due to American sanctions. The company is now growing only due to the domestic Chinese market and the components it had in stock. The release of new gadgets in 2021 will be very difficult. Most likely, both the American and European markets for future Huawei smartphones will be completely lost.

Huawei, in my opinion, is the best smartphone company. They are working towards not being dependent on the United States. Android worked directly with Google, but Google blocks work with the company. Installing Harmony 2.0 will help the company to be self-sufficient and independent. Huawei P Smart 2022 is truly a phone from the future. I have a smartphone from this particular company and I’m quite happy with everything. The update will only be beneficial.

Despite American sanctions, Huawei is afloat. It is difficult to predict the contents of a smartphone as the situation is constantly changing. Recently, restrictions on the supply of American processors were lifted. A waterproof case would also not harm the device.

How is the P line so attractive and “different” from other Huaweis and Honors? they are all like clones, indistinguishable from each other, and this annoying Kirin710 has already been stuck in 30 or 40 models in 2.5 years, only the screen diagonal is moved back and forth and the cameras are increased 2-3-4-5, jerking off like Dzyuba

Huawei products are actually quite decent and high quality. A powerful battery, a quite good camera, and in general, smartphones are fast, do not glitch or freeze. But the new models do not have Google Play services and this causes some inconvenience. I personally encountered this problem when I bought an honor 9A smartphone - it now has its own AppGallery application store, but there is still a very meager application catalog. And if you download applications from third-party sources, then many applications do not work correctly or even refuse to work without Google services.

Huawei really doesn't stand still. US sanctions are a big hindrance, but they are solving problems using internal resources. And that is great. Life dictates its own rules. There are so many new products here: a flexible display, “liquid” lenses, a new Kirin 9000 processor and much more. They don’t stand still, they develop, and that’s wonderful.

According to several Chinese insiders, the new devices will be shown at an event on July 29. If rumors are to be believed, the new series will have three models: Huawei P50, Huawei P50 Pro and Huawei P50 Pro+. The new products are credited with proprietary Kirin chips, although it is possible that one of the smartphones will receive the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC.

Smart watch Huawei Watch Fit [New]

Specifications of Watch Fit New (2021).

Huawei does not name the exact battery capacity. The company makes statements on the autonomy of the new Watch Fit New fitness bracelet in numbers:

  • 10 days of operation as usual;
  • 7 days intensive;
  • 12 hours in GPS geolocation mode.

2020 Watch Fit model 180 mAh . According to tests, it lasts for 10 days on average. The average load comes out to be around 0.75 mA , which is consistent with FCC testing.

According to those who have already reached the new 2021 model, there were no physical differences over the year. This means the autonomy will be approximately the same.

New smartphones without Android

Future Huawei smartphones will run on a new operating system – Harmony OS 2.0. The system supports not only phones, but also smart devices - smart watches, TVs, smart home control points. It will completely replace Android for the company's devices, and the transition of all devices is scheduled for 2022.

It is planned to release a smartphone based on stable Harmony 2.0 in 2021. It is not yet clear when to expect it, since until 2022 the operating system will be able to support only the weakest devices. Its main advantages are convenient interconnection and interaction of devices of one system with each other. For example, mirroring your phone screen on your TV and using it as a remote control for your tablet is common. The developers also promise easy interaction between flagships and household appliances and smart appliances.

Smart watch Huawei Watch 3

The exact battery capacity is not reported. the Watch 3's battery life is listed as follows :

  • 3 days in normal use;
  • 14 days in energy saving mode;
  • 1.5 days paired with iPhone.

We were unable to find technical information. It's not on FCCID.IO either. If you trust insiders, then Huawei Watch 3 has a battery capacity of 450 mAh . According to calculations, the most active phase of smartwatch operation reaches 12.5 mA load.

⇡#Hardware and performance

Huawei nova 8 is based on the HiSilicon Kirin 820E mid-level hardware platform.

The chip contains six computing cores: three ARM Cortex-A76 cores with a frequency of 2.22 GHz and three ARM Cortex-A55 cores with a clock frequency of 1.84 GHz. Graphics subsystem – ARM Mali-G57. Technological process – 7 nm.

Unfortunately, as has become the norm lately, Huawei is releasing devices for testing with the installation of the main benchmarks blocked - both those that are not officially supported by the ecosystem, like Geekbench and GFXBench, and those that are quite accessible in the AppGallery, like AnTuTu. So we were able to test the smartphone only using, for some reason, supported 3D Mark and browser tests: Sunspider, Webxprt and Octane. In principle, this is enough to understand the level of performance - it allows you to run any modern games on nova 8 without any problems (more precisely, those that will work on a smartphone without Google services), and almost always with high graphic settings. But the Nova will not be able to compete, for example, with the similarly priced Huawei P40 or, especially, the realme GT Nova. First of all, this concerns the reserve for the future - right now, productivity seems sufficient, everything works quickly, but not rapidly.

But Huawei nova 8 has no problems with cooling. Lifetime tests from the 3D Mark package showed virtually no throttling, and the body heats up quite moderately. And our standard CPU Throttling Test also did not work on nova 8.

Huawei nova 8 exists with two options for built-in memory, but is supplied to Russia with only one - 128 GB. Considering the lack of a memory card slot, it’s not too impressive. There is more than enough RAM - 8 GB.

⇡#Communications and wireless communications

Huawei nova 8 has a dual nano-SIM slot. The manufacturer does not indicate the speed of the LTE modem, but everything works quickly, without problems. All required ranges are supported.
