Galaxy M51 vs Galaxy A71: M Series Undercuts A Series Again

The Galaxy M51 was launched in Russia earlier this week and will soon hit the shelves in other markets including Europe and India.
It's an exciting mid-range phone because of its monster 7,000mAh battery, but it has other pros as well. In fact, the Galaxy M51 seems to make the Galaxy A71 quite obsolete in markets where both phones are available, especially since the first model is available at a lower price. Looking at the Galaxy M51 vs Galaxy A71 comparison, it seems like history is repeating itself just like the Galaxy M31s is inferior to the Galaxy A51. The Galaxy M51 seems like a superior model despite the lower price, but the Galaxy A71 has a few advantages. Let's take a closer look.

Colors and appearance of smartphones

Galaxy A71Galaxy M51

Colors

The design of the devices is particularly attractive, but everyone has different tastes, so let's not judge the appearance. Galaxy A71 has 3 colors: blue, black and silver. 2 colors are used as a solution for the Galaxy M51 case: black and white. Based on the number of color options presented, we put the Galaxy A71 phone.

Galaxy M51 vs Galaxy A71

The two mid-range phones share many specifications, including a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-O display with 2,400 by 1,080 pixels. They also have almost the same dimensions, but the Galaxy M51 is slightly thicker and heavier.

Both smartphones look very similar, except for the color scheme and design. However, the Galaxy A71 has an in-display fingerprint sensor while the Galaxy M51 has a side-mounted sensor. The Galaxy A71 takes a more modern approach in this regard, but side-mounted fingerprint sensors tend to be faster and more accurate.

The camera setup is also very similar on both the phones and includes a 64MP wide-angle camera, a 12MP ultra-wide camera, a 5MP depth sensor, and a 5MP macro camera. Both models have a 32-megapixel selfie sensor with f/2.2 aperture.

The advantage of the Galaxy A71 is that it runs Android 10 and One UI 2.1 out of the box while the Galaxy M51 runs One UI 2.1 Core, but the balance tips in favor of the Galaxy M51 when you dig deeper under the hood.

While both phones have 6GB/8GB RAM and 128GB storage expandable via microSD up to 512GB, the Galaxy M51 has the better chipset. It is powered by the Snapdragon 730G SoC, while the Galaxy A71 has the Snapdragon 730 solution in most markets. The two chipsets are very similar, except the Snapdragon 730G has more graphics processing power, meaning it's better suited for mobile gaming.

If that wasn't enough to highlight the fact that the Galaxy M51 has better internals than the Galaxy A71, take a look at their batteries. The Galaxy M51 has a huge 7000mAh battery, while the Galaxy A71 has a 4500mAh battery. Despite all this, the Galaxy M51 costs around 360 euros, while the Galaxy A71 was launched for 469 euros.

In conclusion, if you have the option to buy one of these two phones, and you can live with One UI 2.1 Core instead of One UI 2.1 and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner instead of the under-display solution, then there isn't much reason to buy the Galaxy A71 over the Galaxy M51. Screens

Both phones have Amoled matrices with a diagonal of 6.7 inches and FHD+ resolution. Technically they are identical, but we will compare the test results, which is especially important.

Samsung M51 display at 100% backlight:

Samsung A71 display at 100% backlight:

The screen on the Samsung M51 is slightly better due to its higher brightness. In terms of color accuracy, the Samsung A71 is better, but with an average delta of 2.5 you will not notice color deviations. Both phones have great screens, but the Samsung Galaxy M51 is a little brighter, which is a plus.

Design and screen, very similar

When we look at them from the outside, they may seem like they are twin brothers as they include the same rear camera module and a front hole also located in the center. The materials they are made from are also the same, with the highlight being plastic. But everything changes when it comes to weight, where the Galaxy M51 is heavier , reaching 213 grams for the battery, which we will learn about later.

As for the screen, they share 6.67-inch Amoled panel , which the A71 only slightly increased to 6.7. The pixel density per inch is also 390 for both, with Full HD+ resolution that allows us to enjoy our favorite content. Both phones are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and are scratch-resistant.

Batteries

Galaxy M51 was designed initially as a standalone smartphone. The engineers stuffed a 7,000 mAh battery into it, and it's awesome. The A71 has a lower capacity - 4500 mAh, that is, 2500 mAh less. Let's look at the test results.

Samsung Galaxy M51:

Samsung Galaxy A71:

Samsung M51 lasts longer in all usage scenarios - the extra 2.5 Ah makes itself felt. When your priority is battery life, you need to take the Samsung M51.

Battery and communication

We have reached the key point to choose one or the other smartphone, because with 4500 mAh, the Galaxy A71 offers us an autonomy that can last a whole day without problems, although the 7000 mAh of the M51 is unmatched by most mobile phones on the market. On the other hand, fast charging in both models is 25W, although you should note that the M51 will take longer to charge. In terms of connectivity, there is no shortage of details, NFC, audio jack and 4G along with Bluetooth 5.0. The fingerprint scanner changes position: on the side of the M51 and under the screen of the A71.

Performance

Smartphones are equipped with virtually the same processors:

The G in the hardware name means an increase in GPU clock speed by 100 MHz. This does not play any role in productivity and for the most part such a move is marketing.

Graphics test GFX Manhattan ES 3.1 (onscreen):

The phones are equal in performance, the differences are minimal, and in the graphics test they showed the same result. This means that increasing the GPU frequency did not play any role.

Samsung Galaxy M12; This representative is already 2022

Following last year's success of the Galaxy M11 and M21, another entry in the series has arrived that continues to offer exceptional features at an affordable price. At the same time, it has attractive enhancements such as an Infinity-V display with a high refresh rate of 90 Hz, a powerful processor or a 5000 mAh battery.

The heart of the smartphone is an eight-core processor with a clock frequency of 2.0 GHz, which is enough for all actions. The biggest advantages of the Galaxy M12 include a 5000 mAh battery and a 15W fast charger with Adaptive Fast Charging technology. Thanks to the mentioned high capacity, the smartphone will last a very long time.

Other welcome changes include a 90Hz high refresh rate display with a 6.5-inch (16.5cm) diagonal, HD+ resolution and Infinity-V technology. The display has an aspect ratio of 20:9. The audio-visual experience will also be supported by Dolby Atmos technology for both wired and wireless headphones, so you will also enjoy premium audio.

Another advantage of the Galaxy M12 is the four cameras on the back. The main camera has a resolution of 48 megapixels. It is also complemented by an ultra-wide-angle camera with a viewing angle of 123 degrees. Macro enthusiasts will appreciate the 2 MP camera for detailed shots, complemented by a fourth 2 MP module designed for creative work with depth of field, such as portraits. The Galaxy M12 features an attractive matte finish.

The Android 11 operating system complements the One UI Core user interface. The Galaxy M12 also supports Samsung's premium services such as Samsung Health, Galaxy Apps or Smart Switch.

Cameras

Whether the phones are the same or not, they have 64 megapixel main cameras without stabilization and with an f/1.8 aperture; There are also wide-angle and macro cameras, depth sensors.

We gave many examples of photos from the cameras of two smartphones in our reviews:

Below are crops from test images copied from the GSMArena photo comparison tool.

The Samsung Galaxy M51 takes slightly better photos in low light and produces more accurate exposure. The frame on the Galaxy A71 is dark, so the Galaxy M51 wins in the camera comparison.

What differences are there in the cameras?

Taking a look at the specifications of the Galaxy A71 and its M51 opponent, we might think that there are no changes in the cameras. They match in megapixels as well as aperture in the four main lenses, but the same happens with the 32 Mpx front camera. However, being strict, we find that the lenses change the manufacturer and therefore the results.

The M51's main lens is the Sony IMX682 Exmor RS, which outperforms the Samsung Bright S5KGW1. There are no changes in 12 Mpx wide-angle mode, 5 Mpx portrait mode and 5 Mpx macro mode. For selfies, the M51 camera wins again with the Sony IMX 616 lens and will be followed by the Samsung S5KGD1. Video recording is very similar, with electronic stabilization, maximum 4K resolution and autofocus.

Why I advise everyone to buy Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71

It has always been difficult for me to choose a new smartphone. I could spend weeks reading reviews, looking at reviews, and comparing specs, and still not move one iota towards making a final decision. I myself explained this by the lack of truly uncompromising models on sale and the need to choose the lesser of two evils. But at some point, the smartphone market overcame this “valley of despondency” and began to offer devices that could be fully called uncompromising. Almost.

The best affordable smartphones

Multi-shot mode allows you to shoot with all cameras at once

I warn you right away: today I will not talk about the characteristics of smartphones, especially since I analyzed them in detail in this and this article, but I will focus on the features that make the devices discussed below truly cool and even in some way... sort of unique. After all, what they offer today cannot be offered even by many flagship smartphones costing under a thousand dollars, not to mention the budget ones, to which they, in general, belong.

When I talk about the potential of a smartphone, I mean the manufacturer's interest in its after-sales service. The low retail price at which Samsung offers the Galaxy A51 and A71 hasn't affected this aspect, and the company has made it clear that it plans to actively improve them. Not only that, Samsung, unlike some, consistently and timely releases security updates for these smartphones on par with flagship models, and also provides them with flagship functions.

conclusions

The Samsung Galaxy A51 can be seen on sale on December 27 (start of sales in Vietnam) at a price of $350 for 6/128 GB (price in the Russian Federation - from 21,000 for the basic version), the price for the A71 has not yet been announced, it seems to me somewhere around 80 — It will be more expensive by $100. Which one to choose, A51 or A71? I would say this, if you don’t play games, or graphics are not important to you at all and you are ready to play at lower settings, then it makes sense to save money and take the A51. And if you are a gamer, especially if you play heavy projects, then definitely A71. Even if it has a slightly worse pixel density, you still won’t notice it. Moreover, it is more suitable for games due to better battery life and larger screen size.

How to shoot with all cameras at once

Quick Share technology is an analogue of AirDrop. Only from Samsung

This week, Samsung released an update that added support to the Galaxy A51 and A71 firmware for at least two functions available to owners of the Galaxy S20 line of devices.

Perhaps the appearance of just two new functions in the One UI firmware for the Galaxy A51 and A71 will seem insufficient to some, but their significance must be taken into account. To date, there are no other non-flagship Samsung smartphones that support “Multi-shot” and Quick Share, which means that these innovations can be considered exclusive. And a very useful exclusive. After all, the vast majority of modern smartphones not only cannot shoot with all cameras at once, but also transmit data via a wireless connection.

Set

The box is standard for the entire A-series.

The Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71 are delivered in a white standard box, the same in design as all A-series smartphones. The equipment is also standard in Samsung style. In the box you will find a power adapter for fast charging (15 or 25 W depending on the phone), a USB cord, and in-ear headphones from Samsung. I always liked the package from Samsung, because it’s better to put headphones in the package than a case
