Electronic reading devices with electronic ink (e-ink) screens are an excellent progressive alternative to paper books. But high-quality modern electronic readers are quite expensive, while tablets have become much more affordable. Therefore, many people decide to use a tablet as a reader, since in addition to reading, all other functionality comes as a “bonus” - full color, watching videos, full-fledged surfing the Internet.

The editors of Expertology and specialists from the analytical portal rankquality have prepared for you a review of tablets that are most suitable for reading e-books. But for a complete understanding, let's first determine what characteristics are required or desirable for a tablet that is expected to be used in this way most of the time.

Which tablets are suitable for reading e-books

First of all, we admit that a tablet still cannot become a 100% replacement for an electronic reader precisely because of the dramatically different image-forming technologies. E-ink is a technology that is as close as possible to a paper book. It is the most gentle for vision - we see reflected light, to which a person is most evolutionarily adapted. At the same time, any tablet screen is a conditional “light bulb” that puts much more strain on the eyes. Otherwise, tablets win in almost all respects.

Screen

As for the matrix technology, everything is more or less obvious here. When choosing, preference should be given to IPS. Viewing angles of 178 degrees will allow you to rotate the tablet as you like in any conditions and not see the nightmarish distortions that are an inevitable attribute of budget TN matrices. At the same time, more advanced (seemingly) AMOLED matrices can cause even more severe eye fatigue due to flickering if pulse width modulation is used.

The screen diagonal determines the size of the tablet, and here, in principle, you can be guided by personal preferences and convenience. Recommendations vary quite a lot - from 7 to 10 inches, and in this regard it is better to first try to test different options.

Now about the screen proportions. This is the rare case when the most common 16:9 ratio can turn out to be very uncomfortable. Many argue that this format is generally unsuitable for e-books and recommend exclusively options with 4:3 aspect ratios. Indeed, for books and working with documents, this ratio is more convenient. But at the same time, a lot of other users claim that 16:9 (16:10) does not cause any discomfort. So if you're buying a tablet for the first time, it's best to try out these two formats in person first.

In any case, there are not too many 4:3 tablets on the market, especially new ones, since the majority of manufacturers focus on the “serial” format. Therefore, you will have to choose from what actually exists.

Another point that becomes important for using a tablet as an e-reader is pixel density. Conventional paper books have no such thing as pixelation, so the less noticeable the individual pixels in the tablet, the more natural the text and illustrations will look. Here you should focus on the PPI indicator, but it is not always indicated in the characteristics, and before purchasing it is advisable for you to personally make sure that the pixels are indistinguishable.

As for resolution, this indicator is directly related to pixel density. Obviously, in two tablets with the same diagonals, but different resolutions, the pixel density will be higher where the resolution is higher. Approximately, for a 7-inch tablet, an HD resolution of 1280×720 can be considered acceptable. For large diagonals, Full HD 1920×1080 or comparable resolution is preferable.

Battery capacity

A very painful moment for inexpensive electronics is the savings of manufacturers on batteries. This applies equally to tablets. While the charge of an e-ink e-reader can last for many days, tablets often cannot last even a day without recharging. To ensure you feel confident, knowing that you can charge your gadget only at home and in the evening, a battery with a capacity of 5000 mAh or more is desirable. But even laptops are rarely equipped with such batteries, so this is more of a guideline than a direct recommendation.

operating system

A few years ago, this point was important, since tablets and smartphones running Windows were still more or less in use. But in 2020, this operating system was almost forced out of the market of wearable gadgets by competitors - Android and iOS. And the problem, in fact, is only in the availability of software. The AppStore and Google Play are full of a wide variety of reader programs, while almost no one makes applications for mobile devices on Windows anymore.

Performance

And we’ll end our brief recommendations with what we would have started with under other circumstances—performance. If you plan to use the tablet only as a reader, going online from time to time and not using power-hungry programs (games, high-definition videos, etc.), then a weak dual-core processor and 1 GB of RAM will be enough.

LENOVO TAB

The Lenovo 4 TB-7304F model has a 7-inch screen diagonal with an IPS matrix resolution of 1080x600. Autonomy is provided by a 3450 mAh battery. Although the parameters are slightly lower than recommended, for the price they are very good, especially for reading books. And besides reading, you can do a lot with it. The storage here is 8 gigabytes, enough for thousands of books, but if this is not enough, you can expand the storage by another 128 gigabytes using a memory card.

This tablet has an LTE modem, so the user will be connected anywhere. The OS is the seventh version of Android. Autonomy, according to the manufacturer and reviews, is about ten hours.

Pros of the model:

  • sufficient quality of execution;
  • durable case, screen protection;
  • good autonomy;
  • a lot of memory;
  • wide functionality;

Minuses:

  • At this price they are not available.

But we still suggest that you familiarize yourself with the list of the most popular manufacturers of high-quality tablets:

  1. Lenovo (China).
  2. Prestigio (Russia/China).
  3. Samsung (South Korea).
  4. Huawei (China).
  5. Dell (USA).
  6. Apple (USA).

What are you reading?

We read not only books, but also illustrated publications, comics, cookbooks, and encyclopedias. If you prefer to see illustrations in full format, enjoy bright colors and images, then it would be better to purchase a tablet. Of course, you can also purchase e-books with a color display, but they, in fact, lose most of the advantages such as E-ink of regular black and white books, or the wide capabilities of tablets. That is why we offer the latter option.

Xiaomi MiPad 3 runs on the Android operating system, so you can easily find the right application for reading books or comics. At the same time, you will have access to the Internet, games, social networks and communication applications. The monitor of this tablet is designed taking into account long-term work on the device so as to reduce eye strain. There is a special black and white screen mode for reading books. And viewing illustrations will become a simple and enjoyable process on a large and bright display. MiPad 3 is suitable for those who lack a regular e-reader or don’t want to carry a lot of devices with them.

How often and for how long do you read?

When making a decision, a lot depends on how many books you read per month. If you are someone who devours books and can easily read up to 20 titles a month, or you have to read a lot due to the specifics of your job, you should consider an e-reader. The strain on the eyes of such books is significantly lower than that of a tablet, smartphone or computer. So, e-books do not cause vision problems; in addition, they hold a charge much longer than a tablet. If you read more than a few hours a day, then again, an e-book will be the only suitable choice for you.

The Ritmix e-reader models RBK-615 and RBK-675FL are very inexpensive (4390 rubles and 5990 rubles, respectively). They are recharged from a laptop or charger, and remain charged for several days of intensive reading - the battery on both models has a capacity of 1500 mAh. The Ritmix RBK-675FL model has a built-in display backlight, which allows you to read even in the dark.

Apple iPad mini

Price – approx. 51,000 rub.

The 8.3-inch tablet is both pocket-sized and quite functional. The iOS operating system ensures smoothness and efficiency. This model has a very good camera - both on the back and front panels.
